My question regards tracking website statistics. I am the webmaster for the non-profit Pennsylvania Trolley Museum and we need information on website traffic for grant requests. When I looked it up online one of the suggestions in the article I read referred me to Google Analytics along with several other lesser known options. Other services I checked rated our site at 5.4 millionth rank for hits, no surprise there I suppose but I am curious how to make it better. I also got a couple 5 out of 10 rating when I use another kind of rating site. My question: From your experience is Google the best route to take or are there others that are better suited to non-profits. Are there any downsides or charges that might be incurred by committing to such a service. Thanks in advance. We took a break from shoveling snow to fire up the workbenches at the CRC to begin a new year of refurbishing Macs. We had to wade our way in through a month's worth of Mac donations that have been accumulating since we took off for the holiday season. We quickly learned that quite possibly everyone in Pittsburgh with a broken Blue-and-White G3 Tower dropped it off at Goodwill in the past four weeks; we de-manufactured 12 of them. We also tested and consigned for recycling 10 17-inch Apple CRT Studio Displays. We also just happened to refurbish four Macs to bring our all-time total to 2,292. I hate to revisit an old topic, but we really are critically short of Mac ADB keyboards and mice. We have just over 100 keyboards in stock, but are quickly approaching 300 refurbished Macs in stock. This will be a particularly difficult issue for use as Dave Sevick's newly-formed Mac Missionaries will be purchasing our refurbished Macs from Goodwill to distribute through the organization's developing programs. A lack of keyboards and mice will limit how much Goodwill can sell, regardless of the number of Macs available. Please check those closets and drawers, and pass the word to friends..... Our next scheduled workday is Friday, January 15. I'm delighted to tell you that construction along East Carson St. in front of Goodwill has been completed, and the street is wider. In the immortal words of Kevin Bacon in Animal House, "All is well." We hope to see you on Friday! Robert A. A busy week in Apple for the beginning of 2010. By Jacqui Cheng | Last updated January 9, 2010 9:00 AM Week in Apple: tablet rumors pick up, Mac mini server review, DRM The first week of 2010 is finally over, and with it came a new wave of Apple tablet rumors, iPhone on Verizon rumors, patent applications, and buy-outs. Topped off with our review of the Mac mini with Snow Leopard server, it was a pretty busy week! Read on if you need to catch up. Antacid tablet: As the (rumored) year of the Apple tablet dawns, John Siracusa offers his predictions. Expect the expected. A review of the Mac mini with Snow Leopard Server: Apple's Mac mini with Snow Leopard Server is aimed squarely at small businesses that, for any number of reasons, need or prefer to host their core Internet services in-house without breaking the bank. Ars kicks the tires on the new combo to see if Apple has another hit on its hands. iTablet rumors: March arrival, Verizon 3G, UI learning curve: As the end of January?and an expected unveiling of Apple's long-rumored tablet? approaches, we are starting to hear more details about what's coming from Apple, and when. A look at Apple's love for DRM and consumer lock-ins: Apple makes great products?you'll get no argument from us. But Apple also likes keeping tight control over those products, and if anyone outside of Apple's blessed circle attempts to get in, the company is more than willing to try to use (or abuse) the law to its advantage. CDMA iPhone may finally ship on Verizon in summer 2010: Verizon might launch a CDMA-equipped iPhone this summer if it can agree on pricing with Apple. While consumers would benefit from a choice of carriers, a CDMA iPhone still seems like a pipe dream. Apple: pixels as touch sensors for brighter, thinner screens: How can you make a touchscreen thinner and brighter at the same time? Use the pixels as touch sensors, says Apple. AppZapper 2 for Mac hands-on: beautiful UI, same old tricks: AppZapper has always been a fun app for the Mac that helps users delete unused applications and their associated files. Now, AppZapper 2 has seen the light of day. Is it worth the $13? That all depends on what you value. Apple acquires its own mobile ad firm to one-up Google: Apple has acquired Quattro Wireless after Google outbid it for rival AdMob in a mobile advertising tit for tat. Android closing in on iPhone in user interest, satisfaction: The iPhone still leads the pack when it comes to interest from potential iPhone buyers and satisfaction from current buyers, but Android is quickly closing the gap and users seem to be very interested. Apple flirts with a 3D interface for mobile devices: A recent patent application may provide a clue to the "unexpected" UI for Apple's yet-to-be-introduced tablet. Nokia adds additional lawsuit in patent catfight with Apple: In addition to its complaint filed last week with the ITC, Nokia has filed an additional patent infringement suit against Apple in federal district court. Have a great weekend, everyone! http://arstechnica.com/apple/news/2010/01/week-in-apple-tablet-rumors-pick-up-mac-mini-server-review-drm.ars?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=rss -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... A big thanks also to the St. Alphonsus School Tech Team who made one of their periodic visits. The large-scale de-manufactured continued this week as we seemingly choose broken Macs from our storage area. Thankfully, the Tech Team LOVES to break a Mac into its components for recycling. 17 iMacs and eMacs were de-manufactured. We did manage to find some that actually worked, and refurbished six Macs to bring our all-time total to 2,298. The weekly harping about not having enough keyboards and mice now commences: Of five Macs received by Goodwill this week, only one had a USB keyboard and mouse. This is typical. I'm running out of ways to beg for USB keyboards and mice. Just take it for granted we ALWAYS need them. Now here's the best news about the months-long construction work on Carson St. The construction is finished but they HAVEN'T INSTALLED THE PARKING METERS! A woo-hoo is in order... Our next scheduled workday is Friday, January 22. We hope to see you on Friday! Robert A. Here is the United Methodist Church press release: United Methodist Relief Executive Dies Before Rescue from Hotel Ruins in Haiti New York, NY, Jan. 16, 2010 - The Rev. Dr. Sam Dixon, head of the humanitarian relief agency of The United Methodist Church, died before he could be rescued from the rubble of a hotel destroyed by the earthquake that hit Haiti on January 12. The executive officer of the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) was part of a group of mission and relief specialists trapped by the collapse of the Hotel Montana. Other persons in the group of five, including two more from the General Board of Global Ministries, were rescued and were back in the US by the morning of January 16. The group was pinned down for more than 55 hours. Dixon was reportedly alive in the hotel ruins on the morning of January 15. Confirmation of his death before rescue was conveyed to Global Ministries through several sources, including eyewitnesses from a Methodist guest house in Port-au-Prince, where Dixon and his colleagues had been staying. Frequent press reports throughout the day on January 15 asserting his safety were incorrect. He and the Rev. Clint Rabb, head of the United Methodist office of mission volunteers, and the Rev. James Gulley, a former missionary and now consultant to UMCOR, were at the hotel for meetings with representatives of other organizations, making plans to improve medical services in Haiti. "Sam Dixon was a tireless servant of the church of Jesus Christ on behalf of all of us," said Bishop Joel N. Martinez, interim general secretary of the General Board of Global Ministries."His death is an incalculable loss to Global Ministries, UMCOR and our worldwide ministry of relief to God's most vulnerable children. Our directors and staff extend their condolences to Sam's wife, Cindy, their children, and their wider circle of friends and colleagues." Bishop Janice Huie of Texas, president of UMCOR, said that Dixon "was an extremely gifted minister of the Gospel. He lived his life following the commandments of Jesus to feed the hungry, care for the sick, and love the least of these - all over the world. Jesus is holding him dear, and we are in prayer for his family." Dixon was a native of North Carolina where he served for 24 years as a pastor. He came to the General Board of Global Ministries in 1998 to serve as director of field operations of the non-governmental agency (NGO) section of UMCOR. He then became head of the United Methodist Development Fund and moved up to head the unit on Evangelization and Church Growth. Dixon was tapped to head UMCOR in 2007. He was officially a deputy general secretary of Global Ministries assigned to UMCOR, where he oversaw programs of emergency relief, long-term disaster recovery, economic development, health services, and peace-building. Dixon was educated at the University of North Carolina and the Chicago Theological Seminary. He was a member of the North Carolina Annual (regional) Conference of his church. The argument is that simply because this Apple Store will be about a half hour from MacOutfitters it will drain business from MacOutfitters. I don't believe this to be necessarily true. Apple currently has two Apple Stores in Pittsburgh ( Shadyside and South Hills Village ). Since the Apple Stores have opened about 8 yrs ago, MacOutfitters has only grown. This is primarily because during the last 8 yrs the number of people buying Macs has significantly increased. In 2002, Apple sold about 3 million Macs. Last year Apple sold 10 million Macs. With that amount of huge growth it's only natural and good to see a growth in the number of places selling Macs. The Apple Stores only help sell more Macs to more people. In fact, MacOutfitters has opened a brand new location downtown in the past year. This store is closer to both the Shadyside and SHV Apple stores than Ross Park Mall is to Cranberry. It's only 10 mins from the Apple Store Shadyside. If just being close to an Apple Store was the kiss of death, then MacOutfitters opening a store downtown doesn't make sense. Also, BestBuy in Cranberry has had a "mini Apple Store" staffed by Apple Employees for at least year now and that is a stone's throw from MacOutfitters. The fact is that the demand for Macs is growing and Apple is increasing their retail presence to meet that demand. I believe that a rising tide lifts all boats. It also creates more competition. Just because a company was there first, doesn't mean it has the right to be there alone. I believe that the Apple Stores have made MacOutfitters better. Competition always makes business better. MacOutfitters has to find ways to "compete" or offer services that the Apple Store can't. Having worked at the Apple Stores, I know they are limited in what they can and can't do. They have very little flexibility as they have to listen to mandates coming down from corporate and change takes a long time to happen. Apple Stores are very good at what they do - selling Macs, but I see no reason why MacOutfitters can't be just as good. The fact that they have been around for 15 yrs proves they know how to sell Macs as well. However, this is business and if the only reason they have survived selling Macs is because they were the only game in town then they will fail as Apple expands it's retail operations. It's the consumer ( us ) not Apple that will determine the success of MacOutfitters. Apple doesn't sell for less than retail, they don't even advertise their store locations in their multitude of print, internet and TV advertising. The playing field is actually quite level for MacOutfitters. They have to compete on service and their ability to offer 3rd party products that Apple doesn't carry. If they can't provide a better or equal service product than Apple then they will fail because consumers will choose to go to the Apple Store. I believe MacOutfitters will do just fine as long as they maintain or increase their service quality and offer 3rd party hardware that Apple doesn't carry. Their ownership is in the stores and can very easily make changes that will make MacOutfitters unique and in some ways better than an Apple Store. Gone are they days when most people had to drive 45 mins or an hour just to see the latest Mac hardware. That is a a good thing for Apple, MacOutfitters and most importantly the customer. I live in Peters Twp, half-way between Pittsburgh and Washington. I bought my MBP at Mac Outfitters and that is where I take it for any major work. I just had the logic board replaced. They seem to be quicker and cheaper on things like that. Last Sunday, one of my fans started to fail. I could have waited until Tuesday and taken it to the new MO store downtown, but I took it to the Apple store in SH Village. They had a fan in stock and got it back to me on Monday morning. For me, flexibility is more important than proximity. I have to share this but it comes with some caveats. First - Penny Arcade is an online web comic at: http://www.penny-arcade.com/ They're a comic about (basically) gaming - they're very very funny and successful enough they've launched a convention (PAX) which is the largest gaming convention in the world. They've also started a great charity called Child's Play (http://www.childsplaycharity.org/) - that provides toys and games to kids in the hospital. This year alone they've raised over $1.7million from gamers. So they're big names in the video game world. Second - their comics and news post contain explicit language - Basically, it's "R" rated. So if that sort of thing bothers you, don't read any farther. Every M-W-F they post a new comic, and to go along with it "Tycho" (the writer) posts a news update talking about the comic, or about the comic's referenced topic (usually a video game or industry event) - so typically you view the comic and read the news post (or vice versa) With all of that in mind, below is today's comic and news post - both of which I feel accurately sum up the hype around the tablet and how hard it is for Sony/Microsoft/Amazon/etc to handle the fact that Apple exists. As always, I find Tycho's assessment of the industry to be dead on. Rich had one 17-inch model open on one bench, and Charlie had another, the donor with a dead logic board, open on the next bench. After incorporating working parts from the donor, Rich carefully spread the fresh thermal paste and sealed the bottom. He plugged it in, and BOING! This fine specimen is a 17-inch G4 iMac with an 80 gb hard drive, 1.0 gb RAM, a combo optical drive and Airport Extreme (G). Our tag number is 8693. Tell your friends... :-) The donor sits on a shelf awaiting to give its 17-inch screen to a future surgery.... Our new knowledge wasn't confined to the workbench. At lunch we learned Charlie has mistakenly been using the ladies room at Cafe Davido for over a year now. Charlie expects new glasses to be in the works any day now... We refurbished 11 Macs, but one of our 13 de-manufactured Macs had been previously refurbished by us, so our counter deducts it. Frankly, we don't think it's fair to be penalized like this, but Patrick Cranston made the rules when he designed the database. :-) We also re-imaged two Macs from store returns. Our all-time total in now 2,308. The weekly harping about not having enough keyboards and mice now commences: Goodwill took in two dozen Macs this week, but only 10 USB keyboards and five USB mice. Yep. We still need them... Our next scheduled workday is Friday, January 29. We'll be concentrating on Power Mac G4 Towers. We hope to see you there! Robert A. FRIEDMAN The most striking feature of Barack Obama?s campaign for the presidency was the amazing, young, Internet-enabled, grass-roots movement he mobilized to get elected. The most striking feature of Obama?s presidency a year later is how thoroughly that movement has disappeared. In part, it disappeared because the Obama team let it disappear, as Obama moved to pass what was necessary ? the economic stimulus ? and what he aspired to ? health care ? by exclusively playing inside baseball with Congress. The president seems to have thought that his majorities in the Senate and the House were so big that he never really had to mobilize ?the people? to drive his agenda. Obama turned all his supporters into spectators of The Harry and Nancy Show. And, at the same time, that grass-roots movement went dormant on its own, apparently thinking that just getting the first African-American elected as president was the moon shot of this generation, and nothing more was necessary. Well, here?s my free advice to Obama, post-Massachusetts. If you think that the right response is to unleash a populist backlash against bankers, you?re wrong. Please, please re-regulate the banks in a smart way. But remember: in the long run, Americans don?t rally to angry politicians. They do not bring out the best in us. We rally to inspirational, hopeful ones. They bring out the best in us. And right now we need to be at our best. Obama should launch his own moon shot. What the country needs most now is not more government stimulus, but more stimulation. We need to get millions of American kids, not just the geniuses, excited about innovation and entrepreneurship again. We need to make 2010 what Obama should have made 2009: the year of innovation, the year of making our pie bigger, the year of ?Start-Up America.? Obama should make the centerpiece of his presidency mobilizing a million new start-up companies that won?t just give us temporary highway jobs, but lasting good jobs that keep America on the cutting edge. The best way to counter the Tea Party movement, which is all about stopping things, is with an Innovation Movement, which is all about starting things. Without inventing more new products and services that make people more productive, healthier or entertained ? that we can sell around the world ? we?ll never be able to afford the health care our people need, let alone pay off our debts. Obama should bring together the country?s leading innovators and ask them: ?What legislation, what tax incentives, do we need right now to replicate you all a million times over? ? and make that his No. 1 priority. Inspiring, reviving and empowering Start-up America is his moon shot. And to reignite his youth movement, he should make sure every American kid knows about two programs that he has already endorsed: The first is National Lab Day. Introduced last November by a coalition of educators and science and engineering associations, Lab Day aims to inspire a wave of future innovators, by pairing veteran scientists and engineers with students in grades K-12 to inspire thousands of hands-on science projects around the country. Any teacher in America, explains the entrepreneur Jack Hidary, the chairman of N.L.D., can go to the Web site NationalLabDay.org and enter the science project he or she is interested in teaching, or get an idea for one. N.L.D. will match teachers with volunteer scientists and engineers in their areas for mentoring. ?As soon as you have a match, the scientists and the students communicate directly or via Skype and collaborate on a project,? said Hidary. ?We have a class in Chicago asking for civil engineers to teach them how to build a bridge. In Idaho, a class is asking for a scientist to help them build a working river delta inside their classroom.? The president should also vow to bring the Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship, or NFTE, to every low-income neighborhood in America. NFTE works with middle- and high-school teachers to help them teach entrepreneurship. The centerpiece of its program is a national contest for start-ups with 24,000 kids participating. Each student has to invent a product or service, write up a business plan and then do it. NFTE (www.NFTE.com) works only in low-income areas, so many of these new entrepreneurs are minority kids. In November, a documentary movie ? ?Ten9Eight? ? was released that tracked a dozen students all the way through to the finals of the NFTE competition. Obama should arrange for this movie to be shown in every classroom in America. It is the most inspirational, heartwarming film you will ever see. You can obtain details about it at www.ten9eight.com. This year?s three finalists, said Amy Rosen, the chief executive of NFTE, ?were an immigrant?s son who took a class from H&R Block and invented a company to do tax returns for high school students, a young woman who taught herself how to sew and designed custom-made dresses, and the winner was an African-American boy who manufactured socially meaningful T-shirts.? You want more good jobs, spawn more Steve Jobs. Obama should have focused on that from Day 1. He must focus on that for Year 2. http://www.nytimes.com/2010/01/24/opinion/24friedman.html?th&emc=th -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... It is so discouraging to me to see this public list misused for "flaming" each other. Subscribers could have privately notified me of their concerns ... and they should. That is why REPLY ALL is not recommended when you have a comment that might not be helpful ... but more of an opinion. People subscribe and unsubscribe for many reasons .... and I like to get feedback on why so I can better maintain the list. At my discretion, I do carry on conversations with people privately that are very helpful and provide needed insight. =========== The listserve is back online again and I wish everyone a good day. CEO Terry McGraw explained that the company has been working with Apple for some time now and will offer 95 percent of its materials on the device that Apple will be announcing tomorrow. According to the interview, which can be watched on CNBC's site (the Apple portion starts at 2:50), the device will run the iPhone OS, allowing for transferability between existing iPhone OS devices. It makes sense, then, that Apple will also launch some sort of e-book reading application for the iPod touch and iPhone either tomorrow or in the very near future. The interview ended with McGraw sating the tablet will be "really terrific" and that it will open up the higher education and the professional market for Apple. The interview confirms what we heard last week: one of the markets Apple is aiming for with the tablet is higher education. The information from the CNBC interview is the first to come from a non-anonymous source. Of course, we still don't know all the details, so make sure you tune into our liveblog of Apple's event tomorrow at 10am Pacific Time. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... The new store is located approx. 1 mile south of our current store, on the southbound side of Route 19, at the intersection with Brandt and Dutilh Roads. For those familiar with Cranberry, it is next to the AAA office in Landmark North. The projected opening date is scheduled for late March. Information related to our move will be posted to our web site in the next several days, and updates will be included in our email newsletter (sign-up available on our web site). As a computer consultant and project manager for the opening of the first MacOutfitters just over 10 years ago in December 1999 ... it gives me great pleasure to pass on this announcement. Congratulations to Jim Habel and his team in Cranberry and at Oxford Center downtown. As a note, we will continue to have NPMUG meetings at the new stores location ... but from March forward we will be enjoying the new proximity to the Monticello, Pizza Roma, Wing Kings, and House of Chen eateries that are right there in the adjacent parking lots ... so you can just stay parked after the meetings. And one big benefit is many more parking spaces. Throughout history, there have been questions which are asked countless times every day: ? "What are you really thinking, honey?" ? "Are you going to eat those fries?" ? "Why can't Ben just throw it out of bounds?" Today, we proudly add "Is that ANOTHER bad G4 Tower?" to the list. Of course, the answer today was "Yes. Yes it is. May I have another?" We de-manufactured 12 PowerMac G4 Towers today in a seemingly endless parade. Three other Macs joined them. We also refurbished 10 Macs to bring our all-time total to 2,318. We still need USB keyboards and mice. I've run out of ways to say it. Our next scheduled workday is Friday, February 5. We hope to see you there! Robert A.
