I don't know if this is the kind of question that can be posted or not. I called the Cranberry store but no one knew anything about QB Pro. I don't know who else to ask. If this message can be posted, please delete this top portion before posting. thanks, ej Hi Friends, Does anyone use QuickBooks Pro for Mac? I have been running QuickBooks Pro since 2004, currently using the 2007 version. Although my accountant is much happier with QB Pro, payroll remains an ongoing issue for me. It must be farmed out to software by Aatrix (on my computer). I run payroll on Aatrix then export the information to QB. Although Aatrix has fantastic tech support (at a reasonable cost), the program itself is limited in that it can't departmentalize payroll within a corporation. Example: in order to run an income vs cost for each department within the corporation, I had to create a 9-pg spread sheet, transfer payroll information from Aatrix and then let my 9-pg spread sheet calculate the payroll cost per department. Then transfer the payroll cost breakdown to another spreadsheet and add to it the QB departmental income and expense, I've heard some complaints that the QB 2010 has no real improvements. Does anyone know if QB 2010 for Mac has its own payroll program with the new version and if so, is it capable of departmentalizing payroll--and if it works well. We worked hard today. Honestly. It's just we did a bunch of other stuff that doesn't show up on databases. I've got witnesses. We refurbished just 2 Macs to bring our all-time total to 2,320. We sent a 17-inch CRT ADC Studio Display to recycling land. And we spent hours trying to get past a firmware password on four donated eMacs. Finally, someone said, "Why don't we email Charles Firth?" Well, duh. Problem solved. But we wasted all that time trying to be the geeks we're not. Somehow, there's a lesson there.... We need USB keyboards and mice. Still. Our next scheduled workday is Friday, February 12. We will not celebrate Valentine's Day. Because we all love our Macs and don't need an artificial holiday to validate our feelings. I purchased a pair of 3G phones July 11, 2008 when they came out, creating a two year contract with AT&T which expires July 2010. For my wife and I, AT&T is billing me about $145 per month (including tax which has crept up to over $20 per month). I have been quite happy in general with AT&T service (I didn't have the complaints that some in San Francisco and New York had about wifi coverage), but this year I took a job assignment where I will spend 90% of 2010 in Fukuoka, Kyushu, Japan. (I am now there now). As in an earlier trip to Hokkaido, I added AT&T International service at $60 for 50 MB before I left the US on January 4. This bandwidth would have been plenty per my previous experience in Hokkaido (for email anyway), but now even doubling the plan to 100 MB for $120 didn't seem to be enough. One AT&T support guy attributed it to the number of added applications which suck up bandwidth doing nothing useful and without my knowledge. He knew of no way to block email attachments or any other dependable way to control bandwidth usage, so I told AT&T to immediately cancel my International service. Now I am without telephone service and, by contract, am stuck paying $145 per month for domestic service which for which I will get little use. My wife never uses the bandwidth for which I pay $30 per month. When I was in the US, I figured I got more than $60 per month utility myself out of the unlimited bandwidth I enjoyed there. But that is history. Another American whom I met here has a Blackberry on AT&T International plan for which he pays $40 per month and has no problem receiving many more emails that I was getting. Evidently, he doesn't have a heap of applications calling home to Mama for no good reason. I am looking into getting a SoftBank card here to put in my iPhone. The stupid thing is out of warranty anyway - even though my contractual obligations are not up. I am very glad that I did not buy a 3GS and thereby extend my AT&T contract past July 2010. At least I have some options then. I am glad to hear that Apple is no longer requiring contracts. I just hope they don't plan to force me to watch a bunch of advertising instead (if I decide to continue using an Apple phone). I am looking for options to improve this situation. Replacing my iPhone with another smart phone would be an option. I wrote to my AT&T salesman (South Hills Village), but he didn't have much useful to say other than to come in next time I am home. I don't know when that will be. Any ideas? The La Chureca School - director Monsignor Pena http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t4Lnb90y-z4 In Feb 2010 our international team travelled back to Managua, Nicaragua to meet with Catholic Church Monsignor Pena at his school located just outside the La Chureca trash dumps ... along Lake Managua. Families have lived there since the 1970's following wars and natural disasters like the earthquake of Dec 24, 1972 .... and then revolutions that followed. Today Nicaragua is a growing country again but still has thousands living in poverty. This video shows a bright spot .... Monsignor Pena's work with the children of the trash dumps. The first half shows the school ... the second half is a tour of La Chureca. We are sending Apple computers to Father Pena soon. He is also internationally recognized for his work in the prisons of Nicaragua with "International Prison Fellowship" 2. The Prison Fellowship International http://www.pfi.org/national-ministries/americas/nicaragua We met with this group today and set the groundwork for shipments to the Nicaraguan women's prison to start. The men's prison will follow. 3. The 63 schools of Villa El Carmen, Nicaragua http://www.chessnicaragua.com/ In 2008 we shipped 10 iMacs to Villa El Carmen .... now we expand that to 63 schools !!!! 4. The 165 teachers and 1,600 students in El Crucero, Nicaragua http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aXTLhjbTU0c ( promo video in Spanish ) This rural municipality has been helped in admirable and groundbreaking ways .... by getting teachers trained to teach better. They went from the lowest scoring schools in Nicaragua to the highest ranking recently and have the highest recommendation from the Nicaraguan Ministry of Education due to such rapid achievement. Business leaders who led this effort understand the value of one single computer to a child and family .... they were an INSTANT "yes" to our proposals !!!!! The Apple iMacs will be bulk shipped via several methods, supported by several business and civic leaders we have met with over the last several days here on the ground in Nicaragua. Details are in the works. In all cases the business community in Nicaragua understands the immediate need for early childhood education not as a goal ... but a necessary TOOL to help people work out of a life of poverty and dissociation with the rest of Nicaraguan society and the world. They seek to have an educated and productive local workforce. They also seek to have a healthier workforce of people who are not malnourished, overweight and a severe burden to the healthcare system. Problems that we face in the USA as well, quite frankly. So Goodwill of Southwestern PA will now begin a long term relationship with the country of Nicaragua ... at many levels and in many sectors. I want to relay tremendous thanks to Janet Foerster , Edgar Largaespada, Susan Jackson-Dunsey and the team at innerCHANGE associates international http://innerchangeinternational.com for the opportunities to sit in front of many of the top people in Nicaragua. What a friendly and beautiful country. Janet has spent the last 4 years here forging strong partnerships, paving the way to direct access to over 230 companies in addition to the top leaders we saw this week. More details are forthcoming when we get back to the USA this weekend ... but I wanted to give you all an update on all the success we have had in our meetings Feb 8 - Feb 11 so far. We still have meetings all day Thursday, Friday with more leaders in rural and urban and coastal regions of Nicaragua. This is a great day for Apple recyclers .... Oh ... and by the way ... they LOVE Macs here !!!!! And I see iPhones everywhere among business leaders !!!! There is even an iPhone App competition going on at the university level ... coordinated by a local Nicaraguan business group ... that happens to have a Penn State graduate on their staff ..... :-) How cool is that ????? A handful of presumptive biographers have, over the years, tried to tell the remarkable story of Steven P. Jobs: the youthful visionary who, after being ousted from Apple, the company he helped to found, triumphantly returned to lead a new era of high-tech innovation. But those efforts lacked one important ingredient: cooperation from Mr. Jobs himself. Now Apple?s chief executive is set to collaborate on an authorized biography, to be written by Walter Isaacson, the former managing editor of Time magazine, according to two people briefed on the project. The book, which is in the early planning stages, would cover the entire life of Mr. Jobs, from his youth in the area now known as Silicon Valley through his years at Apple, these people said. Mr. Jobs, who will turn 55 on Feb. 24, has invited Mr. Isaacson to tour his childhood home, one person with knowledge of the discussion said. Mr. Isaacson declined to comment. Mr. Isaacson is currently the chief executive and president of the Aspen Institute, a nonprofit education and policy studies organization based in Washington. He is the author of two best-selling biographies, ?Einstein: His Life and Universe? and ?Benjamin Franklin: An American Life.? He also wrote ?American Sketches: Great Leaders, Creative Thinkers, and Heroes of a Hurricane,? a collection of essays written last year delving into the roots of great leadership. All of his books have been published by Simon & Schuster. The unauthorized accounts of the life of Mr. Jobs published over the years have included ?iCon: Steve Jobs, the Greatest Second Act in the History of Business,? by Jeffrey S. Young and William L. Simon, and ?The Second Coming of Steve Jobs,? by Alan Deutschman. Mr. Jobs has reacted angrily to some of these books, and in some cases has directed Apple stores to temporarily remove other books from the same publishers from their shelves. Cooperation with Mr. Isaacson could be a sign that Mr. Jobs has emerged from his recent health battles with more of an interest in shaping his legacy. Katie Cotton, an Apple spokeswoman, said the company does not comment on rumors. http://www.nytimes.com/2010/02/16/technology/companies/16apple.html -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... It isn't pretty. More than half of the free, on-street parking spaces normally within three blocks of the building are are inaccessible due to high snow. The metered spaces along Carson St. look OK, but I don't know if the meters are being enforced at this time. If you're really dedicated and don't mind the cost, the best place to park is The Ladle parking garage at the corner of South 26 St. and Sidney St., a block from Goodwill in the direction of the river. The entrance is on Sidney St. If you're there all day, it could cost as much at $8 or $9. Today I saw one side of the 1800 block of Sarah St. completely filled with 11 cars covered in snow that have been in the same place since the snow of Feb. 5-6, untouched by humans. The entire block. That's one way to save a parking space, but indicative of the situation in the South Side. There are many cars parked all over just the same way. People are just walking or using public transportation to get about. We'll still have a workday this week, but don't feel obligated to get there if parking will create a hardship for you. Marty Swartz successfully completed a bad-capacitor replacement on an eMac logic board in his home workshop, getting a seemingly lost resource into the ComputerWorks store to earn Goodwill money. Marty commented just how easy it was. In the other camp is the rest of the world's human population, who, like me, maintain that nothing is easy once you open an eMac. I believe it was Rich Fitzgibbon, who had to replace an eMac hard drive yesterday, who summed the issue nicely with "Easy my ass." And that is "perspective." Marty contributed the aforementioned eMac and a 12-inch iBook to our totals this week. On Friday, we refurbished another nine other Macs to bring our all-time total to 2,331. One Mac was re-imaged from a ComputerWorks store return, and six Mac were de-manufactured. Six Macs came into the CRC donation bin this week, but only two had keyboards and mice. You know the song; we still need USB keyboards and mice. Our next scheduled workday is Friday, February 26. We've discovered a swell Lenten fish fry at the Serbian Club just around the corner for lunch. And if one utters the magic words, "Mim Bizic sent us," you might get a couple extra french fries.... Message-ID: OK, Mister Donaldson Sir. Now you've done it. Call me out in public, will ya? OK, the game is ON!!! If anyone (and I mean ANYONE) can bring forth one or two failed or sickly eMacs, I will indeed demonstrate how to get 'er done in a timely, pleasant, and muttering-free manner. First on a Friday session at the CRC, and once at a NPMUG meeting to be announced. Right out in front of Fitz, God, and Everybody. If there is an individual out there sitting on a bad-capacitor eMac, and you are the FIRST to get it into my hands, I will repair yours for FREE. Not just an email response, but the first one actually into my hands. I live in Pittsburgh's Regent Square neighborhood, and I work at the University of Pittsburgh. If any other individuals need a bad-cap eMac repaired, I will be glad to do it for one single Benjamin, parts included. Can't beat that with a stick. So there. - Marty On Sat, Feb 20, 2010 at 2:04 PM, Robert A. Donaldson wrote: > Dear Mac friends: > > Yesterday, we learned "perspective." I recently switched to a Netgear wireless router that supports an attached USB drive. I would like to be able to use that USB drive as a central point for doing time machine backups from two separate machines with wireless connections. However, I know that time machine is fairly touchy when it comes to talking to network drives other that Apple's own Time Capsules. That said, I believe that various people have posted solutions to that problem. I've seen several from my own searching online, but they are somewhat inconsistent and I haven't found one that works yet. Can anyone point me to a good working solution for using a networked USB drive for time machine backups? We deeply missed John Hamill, who is recovering from surgery earlier this week. It was a bit of irony he was not with us as the replacement parts came in for the RAM tester, which is John's domain. Please don't send him a get-well card as he would be put out for being connected with any increase in profit for a greeting card company. Today at the lunch Lenten fish fry at the nearby Serbian Club, we continued our journey into cultural exploration. Beyond the deep appreciation for the cabbage with tiny dumplings, and the background Serbian folk music, we observed a quaint Serbian custom we were not familiar with. As Dave and I were at the bar getting our Cokes, the bartender warmly greeted a fellow middle-age male relative with a kiss on the lips. Mim Bizik: Can you enlighten us about this custom? Sadly, all we could think about afterwards at lunch was the widely misunderstood Jimi Hendrix lyric, "Excuse me while I kiss this guy." Of course, none of the iPhone owners present could be bothered to look up the actual lyric. There was, after all, a dessert table. Getting down to business, we refurbished 12 Macs to bring our all-time total to 2,343. Two others were de-manufactured. Six Macs came into the CRC donation bin this week, but only one had a keyboard and mouse. Numbers like this soon become like the national deficit.... Our next scheduled workday is Friday, March 5. And the fish fry at the Serbian Club is still on... We hope to see you there! I promise I won't kiss anyone... Robert A. This article breaks it down for you. Apple has released a knowledge base article describing the key commands and what they enable when pressed during start-up: Press C during start-up: Start from a bootable CD/DVD, such as the Mac OS X Install disc. Press D during start-up: Start the Apple Hardware Test when the Install DVD 1 is inserted in your Mac's drive. Press and hold (Command + Option + P + R) until you hear two beeps: Reset the NVRAM. Press Option during start-up: Loads Startup Manager, enabling users to select which volume they would like to boot from. Pressing N will show the first bootable Network volume as well. Press the Eject button, press F12, or click and hold the mouse or trackpad button: Ejects any removable media. Press N during start-up: Attempt to start from a compatible network server (NetBoot). Press T during start-up: When two Macs are connected via FireWire, this will start one in FireWire Target Disk Mode (two Macs with FireWire ports are required). Press Shift during start-up: Starts your Mac in Safe Mode, temporarily disabling log-in items. Press (Command + V) during start-up: Starts in Verbose Mode. Press (Command + S) during start-up: Starts in Single-User Mode. Press (Option + N) during start-up: Start from NetBoot server using the default boot image. Apple recommends pressing the start-up key combinations immediately after hearing the start-up tone. http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-10459763-263.html?part=rss&tag=feed&subj=MacFixIt -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
