Despite the one-week layoff to dodge the G-20 headache, we managed to shake off the rust and have another productive day. We refurbished 27 Macs and only had to de-manufacture five. We re-imaged another four from the ComputerWorks store. Adding the swell G5 iMac Marty Swartz raised to life from Capacitor Death, our all-time total is now 2,189. We also begun preparing for a shipment of 50 iMacs being purchased from Goodwill by The Nyadire Connection, a Methodist mission in Nyadire, Zimbabwe. We've got the iMacs set aside, and are collecting mice, keyboards and power cords for packing. We've collected the appropriate Apple updates for our disk image and burned them on CDs for the new owners to update the iMacs in Zimbabwe. With this shipment, we will have a critical shortage of Apple mice, and to a lesser extent, keyboards. We do not have enough of either to supply the iMacs we have already refurbished. Please check those closets and drawers.... A construction note: It's still there, only it's even worse. You know what to do :-) We will have our next workday on Friday, October 9. Hope to see you there! Robert A. She was fine but standing outside, helpless and not able to retrieve anything as she described the fire to us on a borrowed cell phone ..... saying she was absolutely helpless and in shock watching her belongings burn. This included her MacBook and iPhone. And "everything" including her wallet, car keys, etc. At 4:30AM the alarm system went off and the 32 units in her building thought it was just another fire drill. A loud bang on the door and urgent pleas by neighbors made the morning reality more clear to her. She grabbed her cat "Boo" and everything else was left behind. By 5:30AM the rural fire departments "finally" arrived and began dousing the fire with hoses. That was one full hour of watching her rather new style building burn. Fast forward to 10AM and the Red Cross had arrived and provided food, shelter, and a special debit card for $150 cash. She said they were awesome and very coordinated. The neighbors and university students and faculty at Longwood U. all came with money, food, and great support. Fast forward to 1PM and the fire marshall allows them to get their most important items out after he clears the building for safe re- entry. Megan sends a text message from her iPhone ( yeah! ) that the iPhone, MacBook and a precious record album collection ( of mine ) were all OK and retrieved. And no people or pets were harmed in the blaze. Her losses included drenched furniture, her bed, and all the food. Very lucky. Megan is fine and the prayers of thanks and gratitude are deep and many .... She drove home today and is home with us tonight. And we thank God and all the great people of her town. If you've ever had a scare like this ... it really gets you thinking and thanking. ============= Now to the crux of why I'm sharing my daughter's story. Megan had all her data on that MacBook and iPhone .... and she was very lucky to get all back. She had no backups and she knows better ! Ask her dad. The building is now condemned with extensive water damage everywhere that fire did not burn. She had years of academic work, patient information ( she is working on her masters degree in speech therapy ), family photos, email, etc ... It takes a tragedy like this to really make you think hard about backing up offsite. We talk about it here on the list all the time. And my own family members are getting the message loud and clear. At a minimum ... I recommend keeping important files on a flash drive in your pocket or on a key chain. The cost is about $25 for 8GB at WalMart. You can even encrypt that data by creating a sparseimage and password protecting it with Apple Disk Utility: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1578 Next consider offsite automatic backup services such as: Apple MobileMe iDisk - http://www.apple.com/mobileme/features/idisk.html Mozy - http://mozy.com/mac-pro My Secure Backup - http://www.patrickcranston.com/mysecurebackup/ All is well tonight ! She has a new place to live in the town of Farmville already thanks to generous folks at the University .... and is safe again. Hope this helps someone. Here's why: The pastors and mission team at this Calvary United Methodist Church have helped us get recycled Apples to low income churches for several years .... Reverend Larry Homitsky also coordinated our Apple User Groups efforts to serve The United Methodist Outreach to Mississippi, Louisiana , and Texas over the last several years ( and they are still there helping flood victims ). So I would like to offer to you this opportunity to help them for a change. They are so good at helping others in need. The tickets are $5 to just enter the auctions at 7PM. The better tickets at $20 are for the 5PM - 7PM dinner ( see gourmet menu below ... done by Fabled Table catering company ) ... gets you dinner and the auctions. The ultimate ticket is the $50 for the 4:30PM Victorian House Tour with Progressive Hor d'oeuvres ..... you also get the Gourmet dinner , and the Auctions ! I will have tickets at the NPMUG meeting .... or you can email me ( dave at davesevick.com ) or Lisa Ferguson below. Please help our computer outreach partners at this church ... which is now my church, by the way ... that is so gracious at helping others in need with our computers. I estimate that over 350 have been a direct result of the United Methodist efforts to help our User Group and Goodwill of Southwestern PA. Links to the auction items are below. If you cannot attend .... please tell your friends and family. The last several years have been well attended. Steeler and Penguin tickets, LASIK surgery, Carnegie membership and much more on the Calvary site .... designed by some very cool and artsy guy. See you there ! When I burn a playlist to CD, all of the songs appear to be out of order when the CD is inserted in the Mac. However, when I play the CD in another player, the songs are in the correct order! I've Googled this problem and have tried various suggested fixes, but nothing seems to work. Some have suggested opening the Get Info tab and manually numbering the songs - 1 of 12, 2 of 12, etc. - which is time consuming and doesn't work. Other posts suggested right-clicking on any column header (Name, Artist, etc.), making sure that Track Number is checked, and then making sure the arrow is facing up in that column. This doesn't work either. In iTunes preferences, I've checked the box that says Keep iTunes Media Folder Organized. It's driving me crazy! Can anyone suggest something that will fix this? This problem popped up about a week ago; I never experienced this before. Message-ID: <4EB4E469-08A7-4AA3-9E22-319323F10903@mac.com> This past weekend, I upgraded to Snow Leopard -- no particular reason why other than it was cheap and I was in the Shadyside store and, well, no real reason other than it was the latest and greatest. I also purchased and installed MS Office Mac 2008. Don't ask. Here is the issue -- I have encountered random freezes of the system. While surfing, while creating docs in Word, when I get up in the AM and come to the computer -- the little wheel is spinning. Fortunately, in every case, when I have forced the machine to shut down then restarted the machine has recovered files. So far. Is this a common issue? I did standard upgrades and installs so . . . I would not expect anything crazy. Did the software updates for everything. Any comments or suggestions? The application is inexpensive (free, actually, if you don't want advanced features -- the best US$27.95 you've ever spent, otherwise), powerful, and easily makes fully-bootable backups of your Mac. The latest version of SuperDuper! has just been released. Version 2.6.2 is now available and has a ton of new features and fixes. Here's the scoop from the revision history: Significant copy speed improvements (up to 2 times faster!) Preserves compression when copying Fixed extra copying under Snow Leopard Scheduled copies in old format are now disabled and we prompt the user to recreate Scheduled copies work on Japanese systems and with more Unicode/ composed character drive names Backup-on-mount should work on 10.4.11 Adjusted SDUtil path to improve robustness when application is moved (now symlinked/refreshed) Minor copy tweaks Reworked SL status to use 1000B = 1MB, 1024B = MiB for Leopard and earlier. Fixed crontab escaping if user has tcsh as their default shell Fixed issues with explicit Spotlight disable/enable under 10.5+ If you currently have SuperDuper!, you'll be notified of the update the next time you fire it up. If you don't have it, get it. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Update your systems now As part of its regular "Patch Tuesday" cycle, Microsoft has released a number of fixes for a number of its widely deployed products to patch critical security vulnerabilities. Eight of the critical patches, addressing vulnerabilities in Windows, Microsoft Office, Internet Explorer, Silverlight, SQL Server, Forefront, Visual Studio, and other products, aim to stop hackers dead in their tracks from launching malicious attacks remotely. A further five of the patches are classified as "important." In total, 34 security holes are fixed in what is Microsoft's largest ever bundle of Patch Tuesday security updates. Microsoft's security response center has also released a chart, showing the severity of each vulnerability. "Red" means "critical" - in other words, that's as bad as thing gets. So the amount of "red" you see below should be a good indication of how serious these vulnerabilities are. If any more underlining of the importance were necessary, bear in mind that functioning code which exploits some of the vulnerabilities addressed by Microsoft's patches has already been published. You can learn much more about the patches in an advisory posted on Microsoft's website. Meanwhile, Adobe has also issued advice regarding critical vulnerabilities in Adobe Reader and Adobe Acrobat. Unlike the patches released by Microsoft, Adobe's fixes cover Windows, Apple Mac OS X, and Unix/Linux. In total, the Adobe fixes patch a stonking 29 vulnerabilities. Sophos has already seen malware which exploits some of the vulnerabilities affecting the Adobe PDF file format. Over on his blog, Chet has some interesting things to say about these latest patches - looking in greater detail at some of the vulnerabilities, and questioning whether Adobe could learn a thing or two from Microsoft when it comes to responding to flaws in their code. Whether you agree with Chet or not, one thing is clear - if you're an affected Microsoft or Adobe user, you need to roll these patches out as a matter of priority. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Rich Fitzgibbon was unavoidably detained being photographed in front of an Apple Store in Ottawa, eh? Boy, we really miss those Keystone Oaks School District Macs. We began bring Macs from the basement storage area at Goodwill, and they are not nearly as "robust" as the ones we've been used to working on. We only refurbished six Macs but had to de-manufacture 16 others. This brings our all-time total to 2,218. We did a rough inventory of ready-to-sell refurbished Macs. There are 89 in the ComputerWorks store, and another 187 in storage. We estimate there are only another 285 Macs in Goodwill storage awaiting refurbishment. Based on what we have seen today, we think maybe 50-60 percent may be able to be refurbished. None of them have keyboard or mice. We still have a critical shortage of USB Apple mice and keyboards. We do not have enough to supply all the already-prepared Macs we have. As the holiday gift-buying season is upon us, we are concerned the ComputerWorks store will not be able to take advantage of our inventory. Please pass the word. We can use any brand of USB Apple keyboard and mice. A construction note: It's still there, only it's even worse. You know what to do :-) We will have our next workday on Friday, October 23. At our workday on Friday, October 30, we will be starting early at 8:00 a.m. to begin packing the 50 iMacs we've prepared to be sent to Nyadire, Zimbabwe. This task is decidedly non-technical, and we can use any help we can get. If you want to see where our Macs are headed, you can visit www.nyadire.org Hope to see you there! Robert A. Apple Q4 Results: Another Big Quarter, More Macs And iPhones Sold Than Ever Before 55 Comments Share by MG Siegler on October 19, 2009 The Q4 numbers are in for Apple and they?re good. Quite good. Really good. The company posted revenue of $9.87 billion and a net quarterly profit of $1.67 billion, or $1.82 per diluted share. Apple?s own earnings projections for Q4 were $1.23 a share, but they always put them laughably low. Analysts? projections expected them to be around $1.42 a share, but some were looking for numbers as high as $1.60 a share. Apple beat all of those, easily. Apple sold 3.05 million Macs in the quarter, up 17 percent from a year ago. They also sold 7.4 million iPhones in the quarter, a 7 percent growth from a year ago. Both of those are record sales numbers, CEO Steve Jobs notes. By comparison, in Q3 of this year, Apple sold 5.2 million iPhones. That was a huge 626 percent growth over the year ago period, when they sold just 717,000 iPhones. But part of that difference was because the iPhone 3GS came out in June of this year whereas last year, it was out in July, right near the end of the quarter. iPod numbers, on the other hand, continued to go the wrong way. The company sold 10.2 million iPods last quarter, an eight percent decline from the year ago period. Looking ahead, Apple is expecting Q1 2010 to see a revenue range of $11.3 billion to $11.6 billion. It expects diluted earnings per share in the range of about $1.70 to $1.78. This timeframe of course includes the all-important holiday shopping season, but there?s another key change coming that may put more money on the books. [Update: Apple says it's not reflecting this change just yet in Q1 2010, they must by Q1 2011, see notes below.] New accounting rules will allow Apple to count money made of off its so-called ?subscription? devices, the iPhone and the Apple TV, immediately, rather than spreading the money over a 2-year period. Though there is no real change in units moved, this should add billions of dollars to its bottom line when it happens. Jobs also noted that the company has some ?really great new products in the pipeline for 2010.? Tablet, anyone? Below, find our live-blog of the Q4 earnings call On the call: Apple CFO Peter Oppenheimer, Apple COO Tim Cook, as well as Apple?s Treasurer. Note are paraphrased PO: We?re extremely please to report Apple?s most profitable quarter ever. Thrilled will the results, especially in this economic environment. Operating margin was Apple?s highest ever. Beating previous Mac sales record by 440,000. Faster than market growth in 19 of the last 20 quarters. Portable sales up 35% year over year. Big growth in Asia/Pacific market. Back to schools sales were strong, highest sales ever for U.S. education. Sales of OS X Snow Leopard release was twice as fast as Leopard. (It was much cheaper.) 10.2 million iPods, a year ago we sold 11 million. 50% of recent iPod buyers were still buying their first iPod. People love the iPod nano?s new video camera. Sales of iPod touch were up 100% year over year. App Store and new $199 helped this. Over 70% for share of U.S. MP3 market. iTunes had another great quarter. Customers love iTunes 9. Store in 23 countries, iTunes is the worlds largest retailer. 7,500 films now. New record for iPhone sales. New record for iPhone sales. Response to iPhone 3GS is tremendous. Leading in JD Power report in consumer and business. Looking forward to selling the iPhone in China next month. Also expanding carriers in UK and Canada. 85,000 apps now, 2 billion downloads ? half billion in September quarter alone. Apple retail stores had a record quarter. Revenue $1.87 billion versus $1.72 billion a year ago. Most Mac sales ever, about half were to new customers. Opened 15 new stores; now have 273 stores. Why?d we do better than expected? We sold more Snow Leopard and spent less on iPod transition than planned. And component costs were below what we expected. $34 billion in cash at end of September versus $31 billion last quarter. We still plan to use this for preservation of capital. In September, the new accounting rules were approved, so that will change things for us (see above). We don?t know how much that will add, but it should add a good amount. We?re pleased with this new rule. We have to do this by Q1 2011, but we can do it in 2010. We?re thinking about it right now, but nothing more specific for right now. Confident in new product pipeline. Very enthusiastic about the year ahead. Q&A Session: Q: Factors in next quarters guidance? PO: Sales of lower-margin products. Lower Snow Leopard sales than last quarter. Component costs will be higher. Q: Could you discuss iPhone inventory? TC: Most of the countries had low inventory for much of the quarter as demand was high. But we improved supply in September. We have 2.4 million units in the channel. Q: Are you comfortable with that with China launching? TC: I would have liked to have had more. Q: Excitement about China that you can talk about? TC: We?re thrilled to be launching there October 30th with China Unicom. At higher price points, people will be able to get the iPhone for free. We have always seen quite a few iPhones going into China (illegally) so we?re excited. We?re not making projections on the volume yet though. Q: Updated comments on the economy? TC: We?ll leave the economy forecasting to economists. Q: Will multiple carrier change the pricing of the phone in places? TC: Can?t comment on pricing, but generally speaking, in our other markets, I wouldn?t expect the wholesale price to be different with more carriers. But the end-user price is set by the carriers themselves. Q: Seasonality in the different quarters? TC: We don?t have a lot of data to look at since we?ve only been selling for a couple years, and in some countries just a few months, so it?s hard to tell. TC: We also hope to roll out in Korea this upcoming quarter as well. Q: What are you thoughts for competition for the iPhone in the holiday season, like Android? TC: Almost 21 million for the fiscal year sold now in terms of iPhones, so we have momentum. Plus the App Store with 85,000 apps is so far beyond anyone else. We feel good about competing with anyone. I think people are still trying to catch up with the first iPhone, announced 2 years ago. We?ve moved beyond that. Q: Were you happy about mix of iPhone 3GS versus the $99 one? TC: iPhone 3GS demand did exceed expectations. We quickly shifted. There?s an intense appetite for Apple?s latest technology (non-answer). Q: Talk about the Mac business. TC: Last quarter was the quarter of the portables. Q: Snow Leopard penetration? TC: The upgrade sales were more than double with what we saw in the initial period for Leopard. That?s much higher than we had planned. Yes, the price cut worked. Q: What are the benefits of having exclusive agreements with carriers for the iPhone? TC: In an exclusive agreement you can have a level of innovation that?s different if you had several carriers. Visual Voicemail is an example. And in some cases an exclusive carrier may be willing to invest more. Q: Mac business next quarter, will units be flat? TC: We don?t give Mac-specific forecasts, but you should consider the September quarter was benefited from 50,000 order from the state of Maine. We also had Snow Leopard that moved units. Q: How much would you have shipped if you had adequate supply of iPhones this quarter? TC: Hard to say, obviously. Q: Still expect the iPhone to be in 80 countries soon? TC: We ship the 3G in 80 today, 64 for the iPhone 3GS, I suspect that will be past 80 by the end of the calendar year. Q: Is the native Exchange support in Snow Leopard helping the corporate market? What about the iPhone? TC: With the iPhone 3GS we?ve seen strong demand in the corporate space. It?s now in well over 50% of the Fortune 100 companies. And it?s great abroad too. Over 350 higher ed institutions now approve iPhone for their staff. And sales are good in the government arena. Snow Leopard numbers aren?t ready to be shared yet, but Exchange clearly makes this simple. That?s it. Not one question on the whole Google Voice fiasco. Disappointing. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... ( Apple explains ) Message-ID: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2300 They're pronounced the same, but, technically speaking, there is a distinct difference between a disc and a disk. Mac OS Discs A disc refers to optical media, such as an audio CD, CD-ROM, DVD-ROM, DVD-RAM, or DVD-Video disc. Some discs are read-only (ROM), others allow you to burn content (write files) to the disc once (such as a CD- R or DVD-R, unless you do a multisession burn), and some can be erased and rewritten over many times (such as CD-RW, DVD-RW, and DVD-RAM discs). All discs are removable, meaning when you unmount or eject the disc from your desktop or Finder, it physically comes out of your computer. Disks A disk refers to magnetic media, such as a floppy disk, the disk in your computer's hard drive, an external hard drive. Disks are always rewritable unless intentionally locked or write-protected. You can easily partition a disk into several smaller volumes, too. Disks are usually sealed inside a metal or plastic casing (often, a disk and its enclosing mechanism are collectively known as a "hard drive"). -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... The nice thing is the store will be closed, so we should be able to pick our spot and not have to compete with people playing music. The agenda will be: 1) News and articles from the Apple world 2) All the new gear! - New iMacs, Mac Mini, Macbook! A closer look at the new tech Also, I'd like some feedback for the November and December meetings - in particular, if there's a time/day people would prefer (rather then Sat. morning), if people would prefer a different location, and requests for topic ideas. In particular, if you'd like to attend the meetings but can't because of the items above let me know! I want to make them as convenient as possible for everyone. About a year ago we switched from Sunday afternoon to Saturday morning based on attendee requests, but attendance dropped. So I'm trying again - would a weekday be better? For topic ideas- as most of you know, I tend to be pretty technical, and it's been suggested I convert the meetings into a Q&A/tech support/ query session - you email me problems you're having, or questions about particular Mac tools/terminology/features; then I pick one or two that appear common and spend some time exploring the issue and underlying technology. Would that be something people would be interested in? I wouldn't want it to devolve into a "let's all deal with my one issue" meeting format, but instead a way for me to present some OSX features and knowledge with more direct impact on your use. Please join me this Saturday for a look at the new toys, and let me know your feedback! Charles -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I did have to install the bootcamp drivers from my OSX DVD though, and several of those drivers need work. Also, I am really, really struggling to get Firewire 800 to work properly-- but that's a Windows thing mostly. I am hoping for a miracle with that when the new bootcamp drivers come out. To geek it up a bit, I also have a dual boot going, with Server 2008 R2 in a VHD. Win7/2008r2 support booting from VHD (the virtual hard disk file for a virtual machine). On boot my Mac "bongs," goes grey a second, then shows a black screen/white text where I can choose from Windows 7 or Server 2008 R2. I couldn't do any of that if I couldn't install Windows 7 straight onto the laptop, bootcamp wouldn't support it. As to the original point about bootcamp supporting Windows 7-- I wouldn't know, I only use the drivers. ; P -callahan Charles Firth wrote: > Actually, you can install Windows 7 on your Mac *without* Boot Camp fine. > > Callahan did this back in June (using the beta of Win7, but it works > with the final version) > > I'm assuming the Boot Camp update that Apple is promising will be > mostly Windows driver updates (getting the trackpad, keyboard, etc to > work smoothly) > > If you're interested in how to install Win7 directly on the EFI Mac > without Bootcamp, Callahan wrote up a blog post about it: > > http://servergrrl.spaces.live.com/blog/cns!6A418D5155651D56!197.entry > > > > On Oct 22, 2009, at 1:21 PM, Patrick Cranston wrote: > >> Apple will support Microsoft Windows 7 (Home Premium, Professional, >> and Ultimate) with Boot Camp in Mac OS X Snow Leopard before the end >> of the year. We returned to form today with a better match of iMac from the basement storage area. We refurbished 18 Macs and re-imaged another. We only have five to de-manufacture. Our all-time total is now 2,236. The good news today was a donation of 48 keyboard and 56 mice from the Westmoreland Community College. This helps a long way with our shortage of keyboards and mice. We still lack keyboards and mice to furnish over 200 machines already refurbished and more yet to be done in storage. We're still begging, folks... A construction note: They're STILL working on Carson St.... We will have a special workday on Friday, October 30. We will NOT be refurbishing any Macs. Instead, we will be starting early at 8:00 a.m. to begin packing the 50 iMacs we've prepared to be sent to Nyadire, Zimbabwe. This task is decidedly non-technical, and we can use any help we can get. If you want to see where our Macs are headed, you can visit www.nyadire.org We will also be joined again by the Tech Team from St. Alphonsus School in Pine Twp. We will be teaching two classes (about an hour each) on how to de-manufacture iMacs and Power Macintosh Towers into components for responsible recycling. Everyone is welcome to participate in either, or both, activities. Hope to see you there! Robert A. The new 21.5-inch iMac features 1920-by-1080 HD resolution. Our engineers could simply have stretched that resolution up and out for the 27-inch iMac. (A quote from the classic comic/cartoon/video game "Sam & Max" - Sam always calls Max "little buddy") I'm assuming your computer is NOT named this in the system preferences -> sharing pane. But double-check ;) The name you see in the Terminal (before your account name and prompt) is most commonly your Computer Name, but only if you don't have a valid Hostname. So if you're seeing something that's NOT your Computer Name, it's the hostname. 90% of the time, this is given to you by your DNS server - OSX defaults to puling the hostname when it gets its IP info and DNS settings. So check your DNS and/or DHCP server - most likely a previous machine named "little buddy" had your DHCP-supplied IP address, and when that IP was granted to you, the DNS server didn't update, so that IP is attached to that hostname. If it's not the DNS/DHCP server, you can check the /etc/hostconfig file - it shouldn't show anything for the hostname (it's been depriciated in 10.6 but was a very common file to use in 10.3-10.5) Make sure there's not a line like: Hostname = littlebuddy If there is, delete it. (It's very unlikely to be there, unless someone previously edited the file) On Oct 29, 2009, at 3:20 PM, R_Adams wrote: > I recently installed a new hard drive and loaded Snow Leopard. We were joined this morning by the St. Alphonsus School Tech Team, who learned how to de-manufacture iMacs into components for responsible recycling. After a brief how-to lesson, they grabbed their screwdrivers and got to tear their own dead iMacs down to pieces. We also helped Drew Harvey and the folks from The Nyadire Connection pack 50 of our refurbished iMacs for shipment to the Methodist mission in Nyadire, Zimbabwe. They were all packed into boxes along with new clothing for padding, wrapped on pallets and picked up by Brothers Brother for delivery to a shipping container where they will join other goods destined for Zimbabwe. We hope to have photos posted on PghMac.com in the near future. We celebrated with a pizza party, and yunz missed it... This afternoon, we also found the time to refurbish five G4 Power Macintosh Towers. Our de-manufacturing for the day totaled 22. As one of the de-manufactured Macs had previously been refurbished, we only added four to our all-time total, which now stands at 2,240. We're still seeking USB keyboards and mice. Please mention this to anyone you can. This will be a continuing limitation for us in the coming months. The construction on Carson St. is nearing an end. The street in front of Goodwill is scheduled to be paved tomorrow, October 31. The sidewalks remain to be rebuilt. We will have another workday next Friday, November 6. We will not be working on Friday, November 27, the day after Thanksgiving. Hope to see you there! Robert A.
