Unlike most Bible- related iPhone apps, which are merely Bible readers, the Logos Bible Software iPhone app delivers tools and resources to help you study the Bible with your iPhone or iPod Touch in ways never before implemented on a mobile device. "When we set out to develop our iPhone app, we wanted to replicate the functionality of our desktop software," said Bob Pritchett, President of Logos Bible Software, in the press release. "Not only did we do it, but we are now able to reach our greater goal of getting more people into the study of God's Word by giving this app away for free." Currently the Logos Bible Software iPhone app is a free download that can access 30 of the Bibles available at Logos' Online Bible with no registration required. If a user would like to access even more titles, they may register for an account and get access to an additional 30+ titles from devotionals, to commentaries, to original biblical language resources including: ? Treasury of Scripture Knowledge ? Easton's Bible Dictionary ? Systematic Theology (Strong) ? New Nave's Topical Bible ? Morning and Evening ? Strong's Concise Dictionary of the Words of the Hebrew Bible and the Greek Testament ? Dictionary of the Vulgate New Testament ? And many more... If you have the newest version of Logos Bible Software's desktop application, Logos 4, then you will also have access to many of the books from your Logos base package. Currently more than 2,000 titles can be viewed on the Logos Bible Software iPhone app and more will be added regularly until more than 10,000 titles are available on the iPhone. The Logos Bible Software iPhone app is designed to help you do more than just read the Bible. Dig deeper into the Scripture with the Passage Guide. Enter a verse and click "go" to receive a report linking directly to commentaries referencing your verse. The Passage Guide also provides a cross reference list, media resources, topics, and interesting words. All linked to resources in your library. A second way to get deeper into Bible study is through a Bible Word Study. Tap and hold any word in a Bible with a reverse interlinear and a pop-up will display the English word along with all the original language information. From this pop-up, click Bible Word Study to see the definition, pronunciation, translations, and example uses of the various translations. Finally, complete your Bible study by comparing verse across various translations with the Text Comparison tool. Open a verse in Text Comparison and see exactly where each translation differs. No other Bible app for the iPhone provides the depth of tools for Bible study that the free Logos Bible Software app provides. We are now plumbing the depths of Goodwill's basement storage area where our remaining stock of Macs waiting refurbishment are stored. These Macs were the ones we brought with us when we moved from Goodwill's former location in Lawrenceville. These Macs are not nearly as fine specimens as the ones we recently completed donated by the Keystone Oaks School District. Today we refurbished 13 Macs, de-manufactured 11 others, and re-imaged 2 from store returns. Our all-time total is now 2,252. We're still seeking USB keyboards and mice. For example, seven Macs came to Goodwill this week from donations, but only three keyboards and three mice accompanied them. Please mention this to anyone you can. This will be a continuing limitation for us in the coming months. The construction on Carson St. at the Goodwill building is in its final stages. Work is now being done to rebuild the sidewalk along Carson St., closing the ComputerWorks store normal entrance. There is a temporary entrance on the South 26th St. side of the building near the front corner. Look for the red door. We will have another workday next Friday, November 13. We will not be working on Friday, November 27, the day after Thanksgiving. Hope to see you there! Robert A. A new report citing sources in the Taiwan handset supply chain says Apple has contracted to produce a UMTS/CDMA hybrid iPhone due in the third quarter of next year that will enable the company to sell a single global handset to all carriers, and specifically to Verizon Wireless in the US. The report by OTR Global, provided to AppleInsider by an industry analyst, says the new "worldmode" iPhone will gain compatibility with CDMA2000 networks (including Verizon's US network, which is currently incompatible with existing iPhone models) while retaining compatibility with UMTS 3G networks globally using a new hybrid chip produced by Qualcomm. According to OTR's sources, Asustek subsidiary Pegatron will build the new hybrid phone devices for Apple rather than Hon Hai, the iPhone's current manufacturer. This decision was reportedly made to prevent the company from being "constrained by a single-source assembler." A smaller body The research note also identified the new phone as having a 2.8" screen, which is significantly smaller than the current iPhone's 3.5" display. Last summer, component pictures indicating the development of a smaller 2.8" iPhone model appeared on the web next to the standard 3.5" parts currently in production, and a Chinese-language newspaper reported that an upcoming model of the iPhone would be smaller and lighter. Without any mention of both larger and smaller versions in OTR's report, it appears but has not yet been confirmed that next year's iPhone will scale down in size while also gaining compatibility with all major mobile networks. View more photos and diagrams of the panels at iLounge CDMA vs. WCDMA The American technological rift between CDMA providers (including Sprint and Verizon) and GSM/UMTS providers (T-Moblie and AT&T) was widely expected to remain in place until Verizon moved to LTE, the next generation of UMTS service. In other countries, CDMA providers have either shut down their networks and moved entirely to UMTS service (as Telstra did in Australia) or added a UMTS overlay to their existing CDMA service (as Bell and Telus just recently did in Canada). In the US, Verizon decided to do neither, and instead will only be investing in a new next generation LTE network that won't be completed for years. This appeared to leave little opportunity for a Verizon iPhone before 2011, but Qualcomm's "worldmode" hybrid component enables Apple to continue offering a single iPhone version that can be sold by both AT&T and Verizon in the US, and on virtually every carrier outside the US. UMTS is the 3G service associated with GSM providers, but it uses radio carrier technology (Wideband Code Division Multiple Access) similar to but incompatible with Qualcomm's CDMA2000/EVDO used by Verizon. Despite the technical similarities, CDMA2000 and UMTS/WCDMA are competing, non-interoperable 3G technologies. With nearly all mobile carriers having announced plans to shift to UMTS or LTE in the future, CDMA2000 represents a dead end. It still remains widely deployed in various markets however, including the US, where Verizon's CDMA2000 3G network is widely regarded as having wider reach and providing better data service than AT&T's newer UMTS 3G network. AT&T's 3G service is rated particularly poorly in San Francisco and New York City, where coverage holes have been exacerbated by a huge influx of data-hungry iPhone users. AT&T has yet to introduce its 3G MicroCell to enable users to solve their own dead zones at home or work. Qualcomm's new hybrid CDMA/WCDMA chip offers the potential for a single, global iPhone that users can take to any major carrier, solving the network fractionalization problem. It also solves other issues that had served as roadblocks, including the issue of user confusion that would result from Apple selling separate CDMA and GSM/ UMTS versions of the iPhone. With one phone that works on both types of networks, any differences between the two (such as in features like conference calling and simultaneous voice and data, unique to UMTS) will be more apparently tied to the provider's network rather than to an iPhone model itself. Verizon's DROID, cancelation fee launch Verizon's merciless attacks on AT&T's 3G network coverage in ads spoofing the iPhone's "there's an app for that" slogan were another factor which left some observers to think that Verizon could not possibly be in talks with Apple to sell the iPhone anytime soon, but the OTR report indicates that Verizon and Apple have already hammered out an agreement to sell the new iPhone model within the year. Verizon recently launched two smartphones aimed squarely at the iPhone: the BlackBerry Storm 2 and Motorola Droid. At the same time, the provider also announced a new cancelation policy that charges users a hefty $350 when they attempt to back out of contracts involving "advanced devices." Last year, the company found little lasting enthusiasm from users who assumed that the original Storm would be closer to the iPhone in terms of features; whether the new fee is an attempt to penalize unsatisfied users or to profit from switchers next year, it may result in users rethinking their purchases right now. With reports breaking the news that Verizon will be selling the iPhone within the year, sales of the Storm 2, Droid, and next year's Palm Pre may end up repressed if customers decide they'd rather wait for the iPhone to arrive instead of facing the prospect of a major cancelation penalty and the loss of their subsidy credit by buying an alternative device now. Droid reviews have largely described it as a second place alternative for users who want to stick with Verizon. That being the case, the prospect of a Verizon iPhone appears poised to deflate Droid sales this holiday season. End of AT&T exclusivity The news might not be good for AT&T either, considering that many users have switched to AT&T solely because they wanted to get the iPhone. The availability of a Verizon iPhone may cause AT&T buyers to hold off on new purchases until they see what kinds of competitive deals AT&T and Verizon will offer once the iPhone's exclusivity with AT&T ends next summer and the new "worldmode" iPhone appears. It does however give AT&T a year to improve its 3G network and roll out the 3G MicroCell before being hit with mass defections from iPhone users irate over service issues. AT&T can still advertise that its 3G network is faster than Verizon's CDMA2000 coverage, and that it offers some features that CDMA2000 does not, including simultaneous voice and data and easy to use, multiple party conference calling. AT&T has struggled to keep up with the pace of iPhone development, failing to immediately implement iPhone 3.0's MMS and tethering features, and remaining unable to take advantage of the faster 7.2 Mbps HSPA data potential of the iPhone 3GS. The threat posed by a "worldmode" iPhone should push AT&T to deliver a year of high priority network upgrades, and potentially result in more competitive service plans. The new Motorola Droid is $199, but the "unlimited" data plan is an extra $30/month. That caps out at 5GB (that's what unlimited means, after all)- it's $50 for each Gig over that. Then there's tethering - which will also be $30/month. (Also capped at 5GB) And neither of those plans allows for connectivity to Microsoft Exchange (somehow, that data is magically different from other data) - that'll be another $15/month http://www.pcworld.com/businesscenter/article/181590/verizon_droid_tethering_will_cost_you.html Now, I'm no fan of AT&T but at least they charge $30/month for actual unlimited data, and don't treat Exchange as somehow magical. And the extra $50 for that 6th Gig of data is amusing - it only cost me $50 to get 5GB of data *while abroad* on AT&T. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... In the mid-1990's I had to tolerate my computer "PC" industry peers, with their sneers about the impending death of Apple Computer. These two select leadership moments ( and there have been many ) inspired me the most: 1. 1997 MacWorld where Jobs and Gates called a truce http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WxOp5mBY9IY ( 12 minutes ) 2. 2005 Standford Commencement Speech on "Connecting the Dots" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D1R-jKKp3NA ( 14 minutes ) If you've got a few moments .... watch these two short videos and then read the Sam Oliver article ( copied for you below ) and see why this is a great season in American business .... seeing Apple grow, by billions of dollars, right in front of us. I never take that for granted. http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/09/11/05/apple_co_founder_steve_jobs_named_fortune_ceo_of_the_decade.html Apple co-founder Steve Jobs named Fortune 'CEO of the Decade' By Sam Oliver Published: 09:05 AM EST For his role in turning Apple into a groundbreaking technology leader and the most valuable company in Silicon Valley, Fortune Magazine has named Steve Jobs its "CEO of the Decade." The magazine's profile of Jobs noted that the 54-year-old overcame rejection from his own company in the 1980s, a Securities and Exchange Commission investigationscandal, two brushes with death and "his own often unpleasant demeanor" to earn the title. Given that Jobs has transformed American business, the publication has heralded the 2000s as "the decade of Steve." "It's often noted that he's a showman, a born salesman, a magician who creates a famed reality-distortion field, a tyrannical perfectionist," the report said. "It's totally accurate, of course, and the descriptions contribute to his legend." In the past decade, Jobs and Apple have entered and changed the industries of music, movies and cell phones. The company has also remained in the computer business, where it continues to innovate as it has done for decades. The magazine went on to compare Jobs to some of the greatest innovators in business history. "Remaking any one business is a career-defining achievement; four is unheard-of," the report said. "Think about that for a moment. Henry Ford altered the course of the nascent auto industry. PanAm's Juan Trippe invented the global airline. Conrad Hilton internationalized American hospitality. "In all instances, and many more like them, these entrepreneurs turned captains of industry defined a single market that had previously not been dominated by anyone. The industries that Jobs has turned topsy turvy already existed when he focused on them." Since 2000, when Apple was worth about $5 billion, the company has delivered record quarter after record quarter. Today, Apple is worth about $170 billion, making it slightly more valuable than competitor Google. Thanks to its record-setting, Apple is now awash in cash with $31.1 billion in cash in investments. That total, in August, was the largest net-cash sum of any technology company, due to the company's debt-free position. Jobs' decade, Fortune noted, actually began in 1997, when he returned to the company he helped to create. Under his watch, the company debuted the iMac, its modern all-in-one desktop computer, and the iPod, which became the standard-bearer for the portable media market. The report also notes Jobs' well-known micromanagement practices and hands-on approach, noting that he would criticize the text in ad copy. Secrecy and the Apple message are also important. Jobs reportedly rehearses every line he and others say about his company in public. That tactic is key, as Apple is estimated to have received some $400 million in free publicity by sparingly making any announcements about the iPhone before it went on sale. The article suggests that Apple's inevitable future after Jobs will be strong, because he has recruited people who have been "trained to think like Steve." But with the CEO's return to the company this summer, there is no indication that Jobs intends to leave Apple anytime soon. "After creating more than $150 billion in shareholder wealth, transforming movies, telecom, music, and computing (and profoundly influencing the worlds of retail and design), what should Steve Jobs do next? Given his penchant for secrecy and surprise and his proven brilliance, it's a fair bet that he'll let us know when he's good and ready." ``````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````` Dave Sevick Apple Certified Support Professional Helping people use technology in Pittsburgh Western PA, WV, OH MD ... The immediate assumption is that you will use the SD card slot for transferring videos and photos from a camera to the Mac. That's what a majority of users will use it for. For the hardcore users out there, Apple decided to give the SD port super powers -- you can use it to build a bootable SD card. That bootable card can then become an awesome tool for performing emergency hard drive repairs, data recovery, recovering deleted files, and much more. It seems to list primarily open source apps for Mac but claims to be "dedicated to evangelizing free and open source software for Mac OS X, Windows and other platforms." If you click to the Site Map it's a nice concise list of what's referenced on the site right now, which looks like a good start of primarily Mac software. :) Best, Jenn On Nov 13, 2009, at 2:53 AM, Sarah Brim wrote: > Hi NPMUG friends, > I belong to another Apple group. And also many thanks to the St. Alphonsus School Tech Team for joining us again this morning to continue to learn about computer recycling. Although seemingly boring on its surface, the students find it's quite entertaining to actually rip something apart, albeit in an orderly fashion. They helped us de-manufacture 15 Macs, ranging from a venerable LC to a PowerMac G4 Tower. There are photos on Dave Sevick's MobileMe website: http://gallery.me.com/davesevick#100242 We also managed to refurbish five more Macs to bring our all-time total to 2,257. If you're a fan of the ancient PowerBook 100 series, your time is up. We brought about 50 100 series PowerBooks from the basement this afternoon, and they are scheduled for de-manufacture at Goodwill next week. So if you plan on being a Mac collector, let me know NOW. We still have a shortage of USB keyboards and mice, so when you get one of those swell new Mac keyboards or new Magic Mouse in the next couple of months, please think of us as a home for your old ones. Not counting today's refurbished models or the Macs sitting in the ComputerWorks store, we have 154 iMacs completed and stored on Goodwill's fourth floor. There are 15 OS 9.2.2 tray-load CD models, 20 OS X.4 slot-load CD/DVD models, 20 OS X.4 slot-load CD-RW models, and 99 OS X.4 slot-load CD-ROM models. All OS X.4 models have 512 mb RAM and hard drives of 20 gb or more. The construction on Carson St. at the Goodwill building is in its final stages. Work is now being done to rebuild the sidewalk along Carson St., closing the ComputerWorks store normal entrance. There is a temporary entrance on the South 26th St. side of the building near the front corner. Look for the red door. Our workday schedule for the coming holiday season is this: Friday, November 20: Yes Friday, November 27: No Friday, December 4: Yes Friday, December 11: No Friday, December 18: No Friday, December 25: No Friday, January 1: No Friday, January 8: Yes So that's just two workdays remaining this year. Sal was an advocate for AppleScript years before being employed by Apple. Soghoian's job includes making public appearances to demonstrate Apple technologies, including the 2004 WWDC, when he appeared on stage with Steve Jobs to demonstrate Automator, a new workflow feature in Mac OS X v10.4. He was a special guest at the Leopard Tech Talks. Today this post from The Unofficial Apple Weblog ( TUAW ) was worth sending to you in it's entirety .... .... by the way, his last name is pronounced ( sa - goy - in ) ======================== http://www.tuaw.com/2009/11/13/sal-soghoian-talks-automator-use-in-education/ Sal Soghoian Product Manager Automation Technologies Apple, Inc. Guest Post Sal Soghoian Apple?s Production Manager for Apple Automator Sal Soghoian is no stranger to any Apple developer. One of the names behind Apple?s Automator Workflow application he shared the stage with Steve Jobs while introducing this whole new way to work. To many Automator is just another icon in OSX yet to be explored but the reality is Automator offers us all a much more efficient way to work. Taking the example of the education setting Sal has put together a really simple to follow guide on how Automator can come to the aid of the teacher and is actually much easier to use than you would think. The Education Setting At first glance, the words ?teacher? and ?automation? don?t seem to be a logical pairing. When thinking of ?teacher,? terms like creative, inspire, lead, and mentor seem appropriate. But if you look past the uplifting synonyms, you?ll find that words like harried, stressed, and stretched, often better reflect the realities of the modern educational systems, where more and more is asked from our educators. In this environment, automation becomes an ally and indispensable assistant. Managing a classroom of desktop or laptop computers is daunting task, even for systems professionals. Making sure all computers are setup correctly; that their desktops are restored and applications put away; that assignments are distributed, or are packaged and labeled properly for submission; that support materials and media are distributed and installed; even confirming that all students are viewing the same webpage; all of these tasks present challenges to teachers and can end up occupying most of their limited instruction time. But there is help. While you can?t automate the creativity of teachers, you can automate the drudgery of classroom management. Each of the previous scenarios can benefit from automation, through the use of scripts, applets, or workflows that perform essential processes and steps automatically as needed. AppleScript For example, a simple AppleScript droplet could name and label a classroom document dragged onto its icon, and then automatically place a copy of that document into a teacher?s assignment drop-box on a server. Or an Automator workflow could automatically close all open applications, clean off the desktops, and open the next assignment on forty computers, all triggered by the teacher selecting a single item from a menu. These solutions aren?t theoretical but exist today and are available for you to use now, for free. Every Apple computer running Mac OS X, comes with two powerful automation tools pre-installed: Automator and AppleScript. Automator is an application that enables you to create ?automation recipes? (called ?workflows?) through a simple drag-and-drop process. And AppleScript is an English-like language used to write customized scripts that automate the computer and the applications that run on it. Both of these automation tools were created and designed for use by motivated Macintosh users who want to simplify complex or redundant tasks, like renaming a hundred files, or mounting servers and copying disk items to them. The links provided below, point to online resources for learning how to take advantage of these free technologies. In addition, specially designed for the management of classroom computers are a set of Automator workflows called the Teacher?s Helpers (see links section below). This collection of over 30 workflows is designed to work with Remote Desktop, Apple?s application for managing networked computers. The Teacher?s Helpers provides easy access to common classroom management workflows by selecting options from an installed menu. And every workflow in the Teacher?s Helpers can be quickly and easily customized by you in Automator. So, if you?re an educator in need of an extra pair of hands, grab a cup of coffee, sit down and browse these links. Enjoy! Research published by Sophos exposes the profit model of the Russian cybercriminals making millions of pounds from counterfeit Tamiflu. Panic-induced stockpiling by individuals who aren't officially classified as being at risk of contracting swine flu, and therefore anxious they won't receive Tamiflu from the NHS, will not only line cybercriminals' pockets with millions of pounds in cash but also grant them access to sensitive personal data to be used for other crimes. You can learn more about how these underground web affiliates, which form networks called the Partnerka, profit from online Tamiflu sales in a whitepaper published today by Sophos entitled "The Partnerka - what is it, and why should you care?" [PDF] Working inside an organised criminal network alongside the businesses running online pharmacies, the Partnerka generate traffic to those sites for an agreed share of the profit. Many of these pharmaceutical sites brand themselves as "Canadian Pharmacy" in order to appear as a more trusted website to unsuspecting internet users. This year, Sophos has intercepted hundreds of millions of fake pharmaceutical spam adverts and fake pharmaceutical websites, promoted by affiliate members. Working day and night, thousands of affiliates use criminal methods including spam, adware and malware to drive as much traffic to their partners' stores as possible, which then sell high-profit illegal goods as part of a multi-million dollar industry. The top five countries purchasing Tamiflu and other drugs from the Canadian Pharmacy, and thus unwittingly assisting additional criminal activity, are the United States, Germany, United Kingdom, Canada and France. Although the precise number of affiliates is ever-changing, it is projected that there are thousands in operation at any one time. Sophos's research has discovered that on one of the more popular affiliate networks operated out of Russia, called Glavmed, it is possible to earn an average of $16,000 a day promoting pharmaceutical websites - totalling $5.8 million a year. But the criminals can be members of more than one affiliate network, and some have boasted of earning more than $100,000 per day. Sophos is warning that concerns about the severity of swine flu, which has led to more than 6,500 deaths worldwide and may reach as high as 40,000 before the end of pandemic, has the potential to drive even greater volume of traffic and total sales to Partnerka websites. The worrying trend of stockpiling Tamiflu has already been seen in Britain. Not only did large corporations come under fire for stockpiling Tamiflu this summer, Sophos further uncovered that this July, when concerns that global Tamiflu production were falling behind schedule, there was a 1400% increase in UK internet searches for Tamiflu. The worry is that there's a very good chance that the swine flu pandemic has not yet hit its peak, and that more people might rush to the internet and unwittingly pass cash and personal details to Partnerka affiliates. The business model for exploiting online purchases is fairly simple. Once someone searches online for Tamiflu, they are directed to specific online pharmacies such as the Canadian Pharmacy to purchase a generic and very possibly counterfeit version of the drug. What most people don't know is that cybercriminals have often manipulated internet search engine results to drive as much online traffic as possible to these sites. Furthermore they bombard innocent users with adverts via spam email sent from hijacked botnet computers and hacked social networking accounts. Profits can range between 20% - 40% for each of the parties involved, depending on who has the upper hand in the relationship. Although unwitting buyers do often receive some kind of drug as result of the transactional exchange, at best the drug doesn't work and at worse it can pose serious health risks. As more and more cases of swine flu in the UK come to light, it is essential that we all resist the panic-induced temptation to purchase Tamiflu online. The criminal gangs working behind the scenes at fake internet pharmacies are putting their customers' health, personal information and credit card details at risk. They have no problem breaking the law to promote these websites, so you can be sure they'll have no qualms in exploiting your confidential data or selling you medications which may put your life in danger. If you think you need medication go to your real doctor, and stay away from quacks on the internet. Sacreligious??? Message-ID: <1134.209.195.143.120.1258554347.squirrel@webmail.nauticom.net> The Creation of the Computer 1. In the beginning G*D created the Bit and the Byte. And from those he created the Word. 2. And there were two Bytes in the Word; and nothing else existed. And G*D separated the One from the Zero; and he saw it was good. 3. And G*D said - Let the Data be; And so it happened. And G*D said - Let the Data go to their proper places. And he created floppy disks and hard disks and compact disks. 4. And G*D said - Let the computers be, so there would be a place to put floppy disks and hard disks and compact disks. Thus G*D created computers and called them hardware. 5. And there was no Software yet. But G*D created programs; small and big... And told them - Go and multiply yourselves and fill all the Memory. 6. And G*D said -I will create the Programmer; And the Programmer will make new programs and govern over the computers and programs and Data. 7. And G*D created the Programmer; and put him at Data Center; And G*D showed the Programmer the Catalog Tree and said You can use all the volumes and subvolumes but DO NOT USE Windows. 8. And G*D said - It is not Good for the programmer to be alone. He took a bone from the Programmer's body and created a creature that would look up at the Programmer; and admire the Programmer; and love the things the Programmer does; And G*D called the creature: the User. 9. And the Programmer and the User were left under the naked DOS and it was Good. 10. But Bill was smarter than all the other creatures of G*D. And Bill said to the User - Did G*D really tell you not to run any programs ? 11. And the User answered - G*D told us that we can use every program and every piece of Data but told us not to run Windows or we will die. 12. And Bill said to the User - How can you talk about something you did not even try. The moment you run Windows you will become equal to G*D. You will be able to create anything you like by a simple click of your mouse. 13. And the User saw that the fruits of the Windows were nicer and easier to use. And the User saw that any knowledge was useless - since Windows could replace it. 14. So the User installed the Windows on his computer; and said to the Programmer that it was good. 15. And the Programmer immediately started to look for new drivers. And G*D asked him - What are you looking for? And the Programmer answered - I am looking for new drivers because I can not find them in the DOS. And G*D said - Who told you need drivers? Did you run Windows? And the Programmer said - It was Bill who told us to ! 16. And G*D said to Bill - Because of what you did you will be hated by all the creatures. And the User will always be unhappy with you. And you will always sell Windows. 17. And G*D said to the User - Because of what you did, the Windows will disappoint you and eat up all your Resources; and you will have to use lousy programs; and you will always rely on the Programmers help. 18. And G*D said to the Programmer - Because you listened to the User you will never be happy. All your programs will have errors and you will have to fix them and fix them to the end of time. 19. And G*D threw them out of the Data Center and locked the door and secured it with a password. 20. The Board of Directors of Goodwill of Southwestern Pennsylvania has given approval for moving the organization?s headquarters and main client service center from the South Side building it has occupied since 1967 to a two-building business park in the Lawrenceville section of Pittsburgh. ?This is another important step in the journey we began two years ago when we determined that modernizing our current building would be much more expensive than moving to another location,? said Michael J. Smith, Goodwill SWPA President/ CEO. ?Earlier this year, we agreed to sell our building at 2600 East Carson Street to Burns & Scalo Real Estate for development as a residential property. ?Subsequently, we signed a preliminary lease to own agreement with The Rubinoff Company for what has been known as the 51st Street Business Technology Center in Lawrenceville. The final step, except for the build-out of our new headquarters, will come in January with the closing on the sale of the Carson Street building to Burns & Scalo and the execution of our lease with Rubinoff.? Located on 51st Street just off of Butler Street, the Lawrenceville site includes two Class ?A? flex-space buildings with a combined total of about 106,000 square feet. Detailed plans and cost estimates for renovating the two buildings are being developed by the Pittsburgh architectural firm Strada. The move is tentatively scheduled for late 2010. In addition to the Carson Street building, Burns & Scalo also will purchase several surrounding lots owned by Goodwill, but the transaction will not include the Goodwill store at 2700 East Carson Street which will remain in operation. ?The Lawrenceville site is a good fit for us,? Mr. Smith said. ?It is easily accessible by public transit for our clients, and when renovated, it will accommodate all our current requirements and foreseen future needs.? -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Today's work just sort of crept up on us. Dave and Mark spent an hour winding their way through the maze of outgoing Goodwill product that clogged the space awaiting a truck pickup to bring several cart loads of iMacs from the basement. They were in excellent condition, ad before we knew it, we refurbished 22 Macs by the close of the day. This brings our all-time total to 2,272. We also re-imaged two from store returns, and de-manufactured just one G3 Tower. You've probably seen Dave's post of Goodwill's announcement of acquiring a new, larger location in Pittsburgh's Lawrenceville neighborhood. The details aren't set in stone, but if they go thorough, we expect to be moving, yet again, in the later half of 2010. Ironically, the new location is just four blocks from Goodwill Computer Recycling Center's former Lawrenceville location. The construction on Carson St. at the Goodwill building is almost complete. The Carson St., sidewalk in front of the ComputerWorks store is open again, and the front entrance is again usable. Last night I was at a birthday party/family bowling event at the excellent Paradise Island Bowl & Beach on Neville Island. My 32GB iPhoneGS, as always, is a big attention getter for those who have never seen or used an Apple iPhone. This night at the bowling alley was no different. Several people looked on in shock as my iPhoneGS bobbed in the pitcher of Bud Light. My brother-in-law dove into the beer with a nervous fist and grasped the drenched iPhone. Yet some issues were evident: 1. The iPhone kept giving and error message that "charging is not allowed ...." even though I was not charging it. Probably fluid shorting-out the power port. 2. "NO SIM" was showing in the upper left corner where the AT&T signal strength would normally show. The Airport menu worked and wireless was OK. Probably fluid shorting-out the SIM slot. 3. The ringer volume was going up and down on it's own. Probably fluid shorting-out the volume control. That was enough for me to know that an Apple Store visit was necessary. I know that I could use desiccant packets and boxes of rice and bounty towels and so many more home remedies to dry out the phone ... but all of these require opening up the iPhone to really get all the fluid exposed ... and thus voiding the warranty. Message-ID: <3949C1D6-875C-4F22-A3E1-5B46838184B2@davesevick.com> http://www.sophos.com/blogs/gc/g/2009/11/23/lightning-strikes-iphone-malware-malicious/ Lightning strikes again: iPhone malware gets truly malicious Two weeks ago I reported on Ikee, the world's first iPhone worm which was spreading between jailbroken devices in Australia, replacing wallpaper with an image of Rick Astley. As Chet reports on his blog, this weekend has seen the discovery of a new variant of the Ikee iPhone worm. However, the important thing to realise about this new version of the worm is that it is reported to be much more malicious in intent. The new worm is similar to the original Ikee worm (and the recently discovered iPhone hacking tool) in so much as it only infects jailbroken iPhones, where users have installed OpenSSH and not changed the default password ("alpine"). However, it is much more serious than the original Ikee worm because it is not limited to infecting iPhone users in Australia, and appears to be designed to steal information from users accessing online banking sites via their iPhone. Two weeks is all it took for a jokey Rick Astley worm to be adapted into something apparently designed to steal money from innocent users. Some may have thought that the Ikee iPhone worm was a one-off. Some people might have imagined that lightning wouldn't strike iPhones more than once - but they were wrong. And one thing is certain - you can be sure that if hackers find they can make money out of poorly-secured jailbroken iPhones, they will continue to attack them. So the (rhetorical) question for Clu-blog readers is this - do you still feel the author of the original Ikee worm did iPhone users a favour? After all, it was him who released the source code of the Ikee worm, and gave the authors of this latest financially-motivated variant the template for infection. We'll publish more information about this latest example of iPhone malware as it becomes available. In the meantime, if you have a jailbroken iPhone it might make sense to ensure that you have changed the default password. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I was traveling in my car, going about 50 mph down the Boulevard when something made a funny sound on my roof and from my rear view mirror I saw a brief flash of color. Startled, I realized that I forgot my phone on the roof of my car and that the sound was my phone flipping off and the flash I saw was the phone falling. Earlier, I had placed the phone on my roof while I was loading my car and forgot it there. I had traveled a few miles before it actually fell off. I was able to make a quick u-turn and found the phone. Luckily, it was Sunday morning and traffic wasn't too heavy. Thanks to my Agent 18 iPhone case, the phone was perfectly protected. No scratches or dents, and it has been working well! This is a first generation iphone, bought on the first day of iphone sales, purchased within the first 10 minutes of availability. I guess we were meant to be together a little longer and I am happy for that. shelley -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... 'House' for instance, is feminine: 'la casa.' 'Pencil,' however, is masculine: 'el lapiz.' A student asked, 'What gender is 'computer'?' Instead of giving the answer, the teacher split the class into two groups, male and female, and asked them to decide for themselves whether computer' should be a masculine or a feminine noun. Each group was asked to give four reasons for its recommendation. The men's group decided that 'computer' should definitely be of the feminine gender ('la computadora'), because: 1. No one but their creator understands their internal logic; 2. The native language they use to communicate with other computers is incomprehensible to everyone else; 3. Even the smallest mistakes are stored in long term memory for possible later retrieval; and 4. As soon as you make a commitment to one, you find yourself spending half your paycheck on accessories for it. The women's group, however, concluded that computers should be Masculine ('el computador'), because: 1. In order to do anything with them, you have to turn them on; 2. They have a lot of data but still can't think for themselves; 3. They are supposed to help you solve problems, but half the time they ARE the problem; and 4. As soon as you commit to one, you realize that if you had waited a little longer, you could have gotten a better model. The women won. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Three years ago, the 2,500-member Christ United Methodist Church in Bethel Park founded The Nyadire Connection to improve the lives of people in the region of Nyadire, Zimbabwe. Since then, it has grown to include dozens of churches and organizations in the region. On Tuesday, workers at the Brother's Brother Foundation warehouse in the North Side filled a 40-foot trailer with an estimated $300,000 worth of pharmaceuticals, medical equipment and other supplies destined for Nyadire. "We found that sometimes people's eyes glazed over when you start to talk about helping Africa," said Drew Harvey, chairman of The Nyadire Connection and a retired Alcoa executive from Mt. Lebanon. "The need there is so great that people here can become disconnected to the relief effort." Team members who make subsequent trips during the year return with photographs to verify that supplies have been delivered, Harvey said. The Nyadire Connection organizes two shipments a year. The Bethel Park church first got involved in relief work for Zimbabwe in 2001 when the global United Methodist Church issued an appeal for help for the African nation. While the focus of relief has been Nyadire's 150-bed hospital, the The Nyadire Connection's members also are sponsoring orphaned children and assisting with the operation of nursing and teaching colleges. Along with medical supplies, the latest shipment will include 5,000 books donated by Half Price Books to stock a community library, as well as items for a nursery school donated by Westminster Presbyterian Church in Upper St. Clair. The shipment, due to arrive in Africa in May, also includes an operating table and a dental X-ray machine. "We'll be replacing an operating table that they've had since 1932," Harvey said. "It's frozen at an angle, which means whenever they operate they have to use a car seatbelt to strap the patient in." In addition to shipping the supplies for Nyadire, Brother's Brother will send medical and other supplies to Jamaica, Honduras, Kenya, Nicaragua and Senegal for other relief efforts. "There's great satisfaction knowing that a mother will sleep better tonight because her baby got the medicine he needs," said Karen Dempsey, vice president of development for Brother's Brother. http://www.brothersbrother.org http://www.nyadire.org/ L-R: Sue Bowers - RN - Nurse Team Member for The Nyadire Connection Luke Hingson - President of Brother's Brother Foundation Drew Harvey - Team Leader of The Nyadire Connection -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I think this release might be as bad as version 4's was, and that was the gold standard for software that didn't work like it should have. Parallels is getting good at releasing feature-complete software that has problems at every turn?in other words, beta software. It would be easy to recommend version 5 for all the amazing things that separates it from the competition, but not one of the new features worked flawlessly when tested. OpenGL in Linux, Aero, Crystal mode and even the MacLook theme failed to load at one point. If this continues, you'll see more and more Parallels users jumping ship, and I know it's happening already. Let's hope it doesn't take a dwindling user base for Parallels to start releasing products worthy of consumption, ? la QuarkXPress. Good Speedy launching and resuming (still) 8-core support (still) Multi-monitor fullscreen support Best OpenGL VM implementation in Windows XP (still) Bad Extremely buggy across the board Crystal mode is buggy Install process still needs polishing Linux installer assistant creates broken user accounts Windows Aero glitches Windows 7 drivers not usable for 3D and games Linux OpenGL has problems Mac OS X 10.6 Server doesn't work in my experience Ugly Another buggy launch release for Parallels Desktop -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... And I realized that one of those things is Steve Jobs. I?m thankful that he returned to Apple in 1997 and did the things he has done since. It wasn?t at all a certainty that he would ever return to the company that he cofounded two decades earlier. In fact, it was only luck and coincidence that pushed him back there. It was late December 1996. I was an associate at Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati, the largest and most well known law firm in Silicon Valley. I?d fought for my job there, and I was lucky to be in a small group of lawyers that worked on some of the hottest deals at the firm ? Netscape public financings and acquisitions, Pixar?s corporate deals with Disney, and NeXT Software, among others. Steve Jobs ran Pixar and NeXT, and whenever he did something that needed a law firm, he called my boss. Well, my boss? boss ? Larry Sonsini. That month Larry got a call. Steve was going to try to sell NeXT Software to Apple. He?d presented to the Apple board of directors, and his characteristic anti-charm won them over. They?d shortly pay about $400 million to get NeXT, with Steve Jobs returning to Apple as an advisor. It wasn?t long before he took the CEO job and started a more than decade-long run of hit products that have disrupted the computer, music, television, movie and telecommunication industries. We worked night and day on that deal for six straight days, barely leaving the office and usually sleeping on the floor under our desks. When we were done, one of the partners drove me over to Steve?s house to get his final signature on the documents I remember stuttering in his presence about my first computer, an Apple II+. A few days later Steve left me a voicemail about an administrative issue. I saved that voicemail for years, until I left the firm. It was, all in all, a formative moment for me. And even today, not that many people fully realize how unlikely it was that the deal would ever happen. Apple was also negotiating with Jean-Louis Gass?e to acquire his company, Be Inc. Be?s operating system BeOS was probably a better product fit with Apple than NeXT. Apple offered a rumored $200 million for Be, but Gass?e held out for far more. And so Apple went with Jobs at the last minute. Here?s what the NeXT Software website showed immediately after the announcement: What if Apple had bought Be, and Steve never returned to Apple? What would the company, and our world, look like today? Apple Then, Apple Now When Steve Jobs returned to Apple the company had just completed a fiscal year where they lost about $1 billion on $7 billion in revenue. The company was worth about $4 billion. Rivals like HP and Dell were worth about $62 billion and $8 billion, respectively. Today Apple is worth a staggering $184 billion on revenues of $36.5 billion and net income of $8 billion. The company is now worth far more than HP and Dell combined. Hewlett Packard is worth just $119 billion, and Dell is worth $28 billion. You could throw another Dell in there and Apple would still be worth more. In 1997 Apple had a snoozy product line that included the ill-fated Newton, the Performa, the Power Macintosh, the PowerBook a bunch of printers and a few servers. User dependence on desktop software meant that only the very loyal or the very strange used Apple?s products. Everyone else wanted a common desktop platform. Fast Forward to today. Apple has the sexiest products in the business: iMacs, Macbooks, iPhones, iPods and more. Even the Mac Mini has a place in my home, powering my television. In the last three months of this last year alone, Apple sold 3 million Macs, 10 million iPods and 7.4 million iPhones. But the hardware isn?t even the start of what Apple has done in the last 12 years. They?ve accelerated the pace of change in the music, film and television industries as well with the iPod and iTunes. And they?ve redefined the mobile phone with the iPhone. If Gass?e, or anyone else, had become the CEO of Apple back in 1997, how many of these products would exist today? Would Apple have ever made the first iPod, entering into an already saturated MP3 player market in the beginning of this decade? How likely would the iPhone have been? And next year we?ll see an Apple Tabletcomputer. Does anyone think anyone but Steve Jobs would have pushed that product to market? I don?t think any of those products would have launched. Or if they did they would have been as notable as the MP3 players and phones launched by competitors like Dell and HP. Quick, who can name any of those products? Who?s owned one? Our World Without Steve Jobs At Apple Fortune recently named Steve Jobs the CEO of the Decade, and with good reason. Not only has Apple performed financially ? it?s worth about as much as Google, and has a larger market cap than AT&T, HP, Intel, Dell and countless other huge tech companies. But forget all that. What would our world look like without him? We?d likely still be in mobile phone hell. Chances are we still wouldn?t have a decent browsing experience on the phone, and we certainly wouldn?t be enjoying third party apps like Pandora or Skype on whatever clunker the carriers handed us. Even if you use an Android, Palm Pre or newer Blackberry today, you must thank Apple for pushing open the doors to mobile freedom. Think back to the phone you had in 2006, and then tell me you don?t love Apple for the iPhone alone (yes, I?ve moved on, but theiPhone was the genesis). Steve Jobs was also the man who talked the major music labels into dropping DRM. He nearly single-handedly disrupted the entire industry. And it?s amazing how many laptops and desktops today mimic the look and feel of Macbooks and iMacs. Apple certainly hasn?t done everything right (MobileMe comes to mind, and I have had nothing but trouble with the Macbook Air). And their stance on the iPhone is irritating and, well, sorta evil. But all of that?s ok. Because without Steve Jobs? Apple the world would be a less colorful place. The man is a living legend and deserves his place in history.
