If there are any Communists left out there, happy May Day :-) Remember, they didn't get to celebrate Christmas. Sorry, I was a Russian history major... Today was an extremely productive day. We refurbished 28 Macs, including two G4 iMacs and a VERY nice 500 mhz G4 Cube, which we married to a 17-inch ADC flat panel Studio Display. One Mac was re- imaged from a store return, and only two were de-manufactured. Our all time total of refurbished Macs is now 1,864. We've begun production with our enhanced OS X disk image, and we think we've figured out how to deal with the technical glitches we encountered last week. The slot-load CD FireWire G3 iMacs we are now refurbishing have a minimum of 512 mb of RAM and 20 gb hard drives. The new image has both OS X and OS 9.2.2 (Classic) so the new owner can take advantage of all the children's software we previously only put on OS 9.2.2 iMacs. The ComputerWorks store will sell this new version for $99.00, and continues to sell our previous OS X-only version (with less RAM) for $79.00 while supplies last. The tray-load CD iMacs with OS 9.2.2 still sell for $39.00 while they last. Among today's iMacs were 17 600 mhz models (all in Snow) with 40 gb hard drives and CD-RW optical drives. They will be priced higher than the $99.00 model. We'll have another work day next Friday, May 8. Our work day on Friday, May 15 is up in the air right now. My wife is having hip replacement surgery on May 11, and could be discharged from the hospital on May 15. I'll post an update early that week to let everyone know if we'll be meeting. She thinks she'll be out by the 15th, but I'm not betting on the hospital. Please note PennDOT has begun the widening project on East Carson St., and the block in front of the CRC is restricted to two lanes. Meter parking in front of the building has been eliminated during the construction. As a gentle reminder, please note Goodwill has finally re-instituted the security procedures they were using in the Lawrenceville facility before the CRC moved to the South Side. Security cameras have been activated, and the metal detector at the exit has been switched on and staffed. Entry is only from the South 26th St. entrance. We cannot enter the ComputerWorks Store and go through the back door as we used to. We are asked to stop at the reception desk at the main lobby to sign in to get a volunteer badge, then sign in to the log book at the CRC entrance at the metal detector. The log book now has a separate tab section just for our members to sign in and out. We followed these procedures when we were in the Lawrenceville building, and it's taken Goodwill some time to re-install all the devices to cover the area with video surveillance. These measures are to make sure data on disk drives does not get out of the building before the drives can be securely erased or destroyed. Goodwill is serious about this, as everyone should be. Any incident of data from the drives they are entrusted to wipe or destroy getting out would destroy the credibility of their operation, and lead to people sending computers elsewhere for recycling. So please, check in. It takes two minutes, and we're not in any hurry. Hope to see you there! Robert A. We still are struggling with technical glitches in implementing our new enhanced OS X disk image. We'll be trying a couple of new approaches next week. I fear the geekyness of it all may permanently affect those of us who have vowed never to use Terminal. I'll be sending out an email at mid-week to let everyone know what the plan will be. We spent most of the day today doing other tasks while we reconfigured our new, enhanced OS X disk image. We only managed to refurbish one iMac that didn't require a server net boot, and re-imaged a store return. Our all time total is now 1,871. Seven Macs were de- manufactured. 133 keyboards and 30 mice (note the disparity?) were checked and made ready for store distribution. Eight Studio Display CRT monitors (six 17-inch, and two 21-inch) were checked and made ready for the ComputerWorks store. We hope to have the new disk image we worked on today ready for production next week, May 22, at our next regular Friday work day. If it checks out, we'll begin churning them out by the dozens again. Robert A. AAAUUUUGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG! Thanks for letting us get that off our chests. We continued to troubleshoot our unpredictable conflicts with the workflow surrounding our new enhanced OS X image. Last week, we reconstructed the disk image thinking that would cure our conflicts. We were wrong. After much trial and error testing, we've determined the problem lies in the server software (DeployStudio) we use to boot and image our Macs over an ethernet network. It's a frustrating process as it produces unpredictable errors at random. We'll be concentrating on fixing this next week. In the meantime, we've continued to re-image Macs using external FireWire hard drives. Today we managed to produced 11 Macs and Marty Swartz' laptop lab chipped in another dual USB iBook to bring our all- time total of refurbished Macs to 1,883. We re-imaged two more from ComputerWorks store returns, and de-manufactured seven others. We'll have another workday next Friday, May 29. US Air Force General Kevin Chilton, head of US Strategic Command, has said that attacks on the United States via the Internet could merit a conventional military response. ?I don?t think you take anything off the table. We?re particularly looking toward one group in Seattle.? The Seattle-based insurgent group is thought to have seeded American government and military computers with millions of copies of malware that allows attackers easy access to any data stored on the computer, or indeed to take complete control of the computer and use it for their own ends as part of a massive ?botnet? to mount further attacks. The malware, ?Windows,? makes securing a computer running it almost impossible. ?Turning Seattle into a glass crater would only be undertaken strictly as the minimum required surgical military action,? emphasised Chilton, ?and not in any way out of twenty-five years? bitter resentment and frustration at computing machinery.? Chilton stressed that members of the US military must begin to think of their computers as the front lines. ?Do you realize that in addition to adding Windows to computers, why, there are studies underway to Windowsize salt, flour, fruit juices, soup, sugar, milk ? ice cream. Ice cream, Mandrake, children?s ice cream! I can no longer sit back and allow Windows infiltration, Windows indoctrination, Windows subversion and the international enterprise licensing conspiracy to sap and impurify all of our precious bodily fluids!? The Obama administration is currently reviewing the United State?s cyberspace defense policy. ?We?re considering all options thoroughly,? said the President, closing his MacBook and looking lingeringly at the red button on his desk. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... We'll arrange for our own Internet bandwidth, and of course, we'll be providing the morning donuts. We need to keep costs to a minimum. We'd like to find a space we can use for about 3 months of classes to see what is possible. Once we've tested some improvements we're hoping for, we'll be in a position to decide if a long-term move makes sense. I know many Seattle-area firms have downsized recently. There may be some readers of this newsletter who have a good training space they'd be interested in renting out for a short-term test. [image: Craigs-Signature.gif] PS. SANGER and THOM SHANKER Published: May 28, 2009 WASHINGTON ? The Pentagon plans to create a new military command for cyberspace, administration officials said Thursday, stepping up preparations by the armed forces to conduct both offensive and defensive computer warfare. The military command would complement a civilian effort to be announced by President Obamaon Friday that would overhaul the way the United States safeguards its computer networks. Mr. Obama, officials said, will announce the creation of a White House office ? reporting to both the National Security Council and the National Economic Council ? that will coordinate a multibillion-dollar effort to restrict access to government computers and protect systems that run the stock exchanges, clear global banking transactions and manage the air traffic control system. White House officials say Mr. Obama has not yet been formally presented with the Pentagon plan. They said he would not discuss it Friday when he announced the creation of a White House office responsible for coordinating private-sector and government defenses against the thousands of cyberattacks mounted against the United States ? largely by hackers but sometimes by foreign governments ? every day. But he is expected to sign a classified order in coming weeks that will create the military cybercommand, officials said. It is a recognition that the United States already has a growing number of computer weapons in its arsenal and must prepare strategies for their use ? as a deterrent or alongside conventional weapons ? in a wide variety of possible future conflicts. The White House office will be run by a ?cyberczar,? but because the position will not have direct access to the president, some experts said it was not high-level enough to end a series of bureaucratic wars that have broken out as billions of dollars have suddenly been allocated to protect against the computer threats. The main dispute has been over whether the Pentagon or the National Security Agency should take the lead in preparing for and fighting cyberbattles. Under one proposal still being debated, parts of the N.S.A. would be integrated into the military command so they could operate jointly. Officials said that in addition to the unclassified strategy paper to be released by Mr. Obama on Friday, a classified set of presidential directives is expected to lay out the military?s new responsibilities and how it coordinates its mission with that of the N.S.A., where most of the expertise on digital warfare resides today. The decision to create a cybercommand is a major step beyond the actions taken by the Bush administration, which authorized several computer-based attacks but never resolved the question of how the government would prepare for a new era of warfare fought over digital networks. It is still unclear whether the military?s new command or the N.S.A. ? or both ? will actually conduct this new kind of offensive cyberoperations. The White House has never said whether Mr. Obama embraces the idea that the United States should use cyberweapons, and the public announcement on Friday is expected to focus solely on defensive steps and the government?s acknowledgment that it needs to be better organized to face the threat from foes attacking military, government and commercial online systems. Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates has pushed for the Pentagon to become better organized to address the security threat. Initially at least, the new command would focus on organizing the various components and capabilities now scattered across the four armed services. Officials declined to describe potential offensive operations, but said they now viewed cyberspace as comparable to more traditional battlefields. ?We are not comfortable discussing the question of offensive cyberoperations, but we consider cyberspace a war-fighting domain,? said Bryan Whitman, a Pentagon spokesman. ?We need to be able to operate within that domain just like on any battlefield, which includes protecting our freedom of movement and preserving our capability to perform in that environment.? Although Pentagon civilian officials and military officers said the new command was expected to initially be a subordinate headquarters under the military?s Strategic Command, which controls nuclear operations as well as cyberdefenses, it could eventually become an independent command. ?No decision has been made,? said Lt. Col. Eric Butterbaugh, a Pentagon spokesman. ?Just as the White House has completed its 60-day review of cyberspace policy, likewise, we are looking at how the department can best organize itself to fill our role in implementing the administration?s cyberpolicy.? The creation of the cyberczar?s office inside the White House appears to be part of a significant expansion of the role of the national security apparatus there. A separate group overseeing domestic security, created by President George W. Bush after the Sept. 11 attacks, now resides within the National Security Council. A senior White House official responsible for countering the proliferation of nuclear and unconventional weapons has been given broader authority. Now, cybersecurity will also rank as one of the key threats that Mr. Obama is seeking to coordinate from the White House. The strategy review Mr. Obama will discuss on Friday was completed weeks ago, but delayed because of continuing arguments over the authority of the White House office, and the budgets for the entire effort. It was kept separate from the military debate over whether the Pentagon or the N.S.A. is best equipped to engage in offensive operations. Part of that debate hinges on the question of how much control should be given to American spy agencies, since they are prohibited from acting on American soil. ?It?s the domestic spying problem writ large,? one senior intelligence official said recently. ?These attacks start in other countries, but they know no borders. So how do you fight them if you can?t act both inside and outside the United States?? John Markoff contributed reporting from San Francisco. http://www.nytimes.com/2009/05/29/us/politics/29cyber.html?th&emc=th -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... The move comes as no surprise. Time Warner executives have been considering for years whether and how to dump AOL, whose transformation into an ad-supported business has been a disappointment. The separation will allow Time Warner to continue ?reshaping? itself with a focus on its content business, while AOL will gain more flexibility to seek Internet market success, Time Warner said on Thursday. To proceed with the separation, Time Warner will first buy the 5 percent of AOL that Google owns, having paid $1 billion for it in December 2005. That transaction will happen in this year?s third quarter. Earlier this year, Google wrote down that investment, acknowledging it has dropped in value. AOL?s spin-off will be contingent on Time Warner obtaining the necessary approvals from its regulatory agencies and its board of directors. In this year's first quarter, AOL?s ad revenue fell 20 percent year-on- year. By comparison, Google, which generates most of its money from online ads, grew its revenue 6 percent in the first quarter. During the quarter, AOL suffered revenue declines in ad sales on external sites, as well as in display and paid-search ad sales in AOL sites. Last month, in a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, Time Warner said it was reviewing its ?strategic alternatives? regarding AOL, and that it anticipated soon starting a process to spin it off entirely or partially. Overall, AOL?s revenue, which also includes subscription fees, fell 23 percent to $867 million, while operating income tumbled 47 percent to $150 million in the first quarter. Time Warner blamed its first- quarter 7 percent revenue fall partly on AOL?s financial performance. Time Warner booted Randy Falco from his post as AOL CEO in March, replacing him with former Google executive Tim Armstrong. Under Falco, who took over in November 2006, AOL routinely failed to grow its ad revenue on par with the industry average. Falco?s tenure included two major rounds of layoffs: 2,000 employees, or 20 percent of AOL?s staff, in October 2007, and 700 employees, about 10 percent of the staff, in January of this year. AOL has been on a years-long process to transition from a business model based on dial-up Internet access fees to an online advertising supported model. However, since early 2007 AOL has consistently underperformed in online advertising. For example, in 2008, U.S. online ad spending grew 11 percent, according to the Interactive Advertising Bureau, but AOL's online ad revenue dropped 6 percent. AOL and Time Warner announced their intention to merge in 2000, saying the deal would create ?the world?s first fully integrated media and communications company for the Internet Century.? The all-stock deal was valued at $183 billion when it was first announced. By the time the merger closed in early 2001, the decline of the companies? shares brought the value of the deal down to about $100 billion. ```````````````````````````` Dave Sevick Consulting Apple Certified Support Professional 10.5 Apple User Group Ambassador Apple Recycling in Pittsburgh Helping people use technology in Pittsburgh Western PA, WV, OH, MD ... Our unpredictable kernel panics with our enhanced OS X image continue to plague us. Only one thing seems to allow us to refurbish an iMac with this image: FireWire booting the firmware-updated iMac with a (now-discontinued) external SmartDisk Firelite 2.5-inch hard drive. We've tried several other external hard drives, but all invoke the kernel panic, including ones with Oxford chipsets. So if you just happen to have one of the Firelite hard drives with FireWire lying about, we'll be more than happy to help you clean up your home workspace :-) Our planned work on diagnosing our server has been put off temporarily into mid-June. Today we managed to refurbish 10 more Macs to bring our all-time total to 1,894. We de-manufactured another eight Macs. If you're watching our count, you will note we will probably refurbish our 2,000th Mac at our workday next Friday, June 5. This will mean we will have refurbished half of our all-time total in just the past 18 months. We haven't decided if we will create a special Mac for number 2,000 like with did with Steve 1,000 at the end 2007. Steve 1,000, a slot-load CD iMac, currently resides in my dining room. He is available for guest appearances. Robert A. I will give you the card for free as I don't need it anymore. I will call Verizon and help you get the plan switched to you. The data plan is an unlimited data plan which is no longer offered by Verizon. The card works with any MacBook Pro or PC Laptop with an Express Card Slot. The advantage to me is that it saves me the $150 early termination fee if I transfer the card. My current billing cycle ends 6/19 so this offer will end at that time.
