One of my clients is Crossroads Foundation - they tutor inner-city kids and help them get into college (and they're very good at it) Anyway, they're looking for people who are willing to help out and tutor once or twice a week - people with teaching experience a plus, but anyone with content knowledge is helpful. I know this list reaches a lot of educators, experts, and generous folk so I thought I'd pass it along. I can tell you the kids at Crossroads are all really serious about this (it's not a "helping troubled kids" thing, it's a "helping smart kids" thing) and would really welcome any help and support you can provide. We continue to be amazed at how many Macs our NetBoot system allows us to do. Today, we refurbished 27 Macs to go along with two refurbished G3 iBooks from the Marty Swartz workshop. Our all-time refurbished total is now 1,762. Six iMacs did not survive their stay on the work bench and were de-manufactured into components for recycling. Rookie Roberta Jones deftly cleaned 75 keyboards to help keep pace with recent production. She also learned of the failing of RAM chip labeling by major memory manufacturers :-) Goodwill ComputerWorks Store continues to sell our refurbished Macs at a brisk pace. As of this afternoon, there were just three OS 9 tray- load CDs left in the store, and just four eMacs remain. We refurbished 11 more 600 mhz iMacs which went directly to the store. They actually had two customers arguing over who had the right to buy the only 600 mhz model in stock last week. We'll have another work day next Friday, March 13. As a gentle reminder, please note Goodwill has finally re-instituted the security procedures they were using in the Lawrenceville facility before the CRC moved to the South Side. Security cameras have been activated, and the metal detector at the exit has been switched on and staffed. Entry is only from the South 26th St. entrance. We cannot enter the ComputerWorks Store and go through the back door as we used to. We are asked to stop at the reception desk at the main lobby to sign in to get a volunteer badge, then sign in to the log book at the CRC entrance at the metal detector. The log book now has a separate tab section just for our members to sign in and out. We followed these procedures when we were in the Lawrenceville building, and it's taken Goodwill some time to re-install all the devices to cover the area with video surveillance. These measures are to make sure data on disk drives does not get out of the building before the drives can be securely erased or destroyed. Goodwill is serious about this, as everyone should be. Any incident of data from the drives they are entrusted to wipe or destroy getting out would destroy the credibility of their operation, and lead to people sending computers elsewhere for recycling. So please, check in. It takes two minutes, and we're not in any hurry. Please note the special event being presented by MacOutfitters at their new One Oxford Centre location in Downtown Pittsburgh tomorrow (Saturday, March 7) from Noon to 2:00 p.m. Apple's Dave Marra's seminar will be on the new iLife 09 and iWork 09. Most of the Goodwill volunteer crew will be there. Feel free to stop us and ask any questions you may have. Hope to see you there! Robert A. A relatively abundant (price 3.55 USD/ lb as of 2008-02-15), soft, bluish-white, transition metal, cadmium is known to cause cancer and occurs with zinc ores. Cadmium is used largely in batteries and pigments, for example in plastic products. Toxicity Main article: Cadmium poisoning Cadmium poisoning is an occupational hazard associated with industrial processes such as metal plating and the production of nickel-cadmium batteries, pigments, plastics, and other synthetics. The primary route of exposure in industrial settings is inhalation. Inhalation of cadmium-containing fumes can result initially in metal fume fever but may progress to chemical pneumonitis, pulmonary edema, and death.[12] Cadmium is also a potential environmental hazard. Human exposures to environmental cadmium are primarily the result of the burning of fossil fuels and municipal wastes.[13] However, there have been notable instances of toxicity as the result of long-term exposure to cadmium in contaminated food and water. In the decades following World War II, Japanese mining operations contaminated the Jinzu River with cadmium and traces of other toxic metals. As a consequence, cadmium accumulated in the rice crops growing along the riverbanks downstream of the mines. The local agricultural communities consuming the contaminated rice developed Itai-itai disease and renal abnormalities, including proteinuria and glucosuria.[14] Cadmium is one of six substances banned by the European Union'sRestriction on Hazardous Substances (RoHS) directive, which bans certain hazardous substances in electronics. Cadmium and several cadmium-containing compounds are known carcinogens and can induce many types of cancer.[15] Current research has found that cadmium toxicity may be carried into the body by zinc binding proteins; in particular, proteins that contain zinc finger protein structures. Zinc and cadmium are in the same group on the periodic table, contain the same common oxidation state (+2), and when ionized are almost the same size. Due to these similarities, cadmium can replace zinc in many biological systems, in particular, systems that contain softer ligands such as sulfur. Cadmium can bind up to ten times more strongly than zinc in certain biological systems, and is notoriously difficult to remove. In addition, cadmium can replace magnesiumand calcium in certain biological systems, although these replacements are rare. Tobacco smoking is the most important single source of cadmium exposure in the general population. It has been estimated that about 10% of the cadmium content of a cigarette is inhaled through smoking. The absorption of cadmium from the lungs is much more effective than that from the gut, and as much as 50% of the cadmium inhaled via cigarette smoke may be absorbed.[16] On average, smokers have 4-5 times higher blood cadmium concentrations and 2-3 times higher kidney cadmium concentrations than non-smokers. Despite the high cadmium content in cigarette smoke, there seems to be little exposure to cadmium from passive smoking. No significant effect on blood cadmium concentrations could be detected in children exposed to environmental tobacco smoke.[17] [edit] =============================================== Apple Recycling at Goodwill of Southwestern PA Apple Outreach with Hosanna Industries Apple User Groups from the Pittsburgh area PGHMAC.COM website by Nathan Brentzel Dave Sevick and Bob Donaldson dave at davesevick.com - 724-779-0099 radonaldson at mac.com - 412-477-9188 ----- Peter Carras and Marty Swartz pcarras+PAUGC1 at pitt.edu - 724-327-5870 marty.swartz at gmail.com - 412-818-8096 As Apple users in Pittsburgh, we are taking local action to keep the environment free from e-waste ..... =============================================== -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Lead is a soft, malleable poor metal, also considered to be one of the heavy metals. Lead has a bluish-white color when freshly cut, but tarnishes to a dull grayish color when exposed to air. It has a shiny chrome-silver luster when melted into a liquid. Lead is used in building construction, lead-acid batteries, bullets and shot, weights, and is part of solder, pewter, fusible alloys and radiation shields. Lead has the highest atomic number of all stable elements, although the next element, bismuth, has a half-life so long (longer than the estimated age of the universe) it can be considered stable. Like mercury, another heavy metal, lead is a potent neurotoxin that accumulates in soft tissues and bone over time. Lead poisoning was documented in ancient Rome, Greece, and China. Health effects Main article: Lead poisoning Lead is a poisonous metal that can damage nervous connections (especially in young children) and cause blood and brain disorders. Because of its low reactivity and solubility, lead poisoning usually only occurs in cases when the lead is dispersed, like when sanding lead based paint, or long term exposure in the case ofpewter tableware. Long term exposure to lead or its salts (especially soluble salts or the strong oxidant PbO2) can cause nephropathy, and colic- like abdominal pains. The effects of lead are the same whether it enters the body through breathing or swallowing. Lead can affect almost every organ and system in your body. The main target for lead toxicity is the nervous system, both in adults and children. Long-term exposure of adults can result in decreased performance in some tests that measure functions of the nervous system. It may also cause weakness in fingers, wrists, or ankles. Lead exposure also causes small increases in blood pressure, particularly in middle-aged and older people and can cause anemia. Exposure to high lead levels can severely damage the brain and kidneys in adults or children and ultimately cause death. In pregnant women, high levels of exposure to lead may cause miscarriage. Highlevel exposure in men can damage the organs responsible for sperm production. The concern about lead's role in cognitive deficits in children has brought about widespread reduction in its use (lead exposure has been linked to learning disabilities[10]). Most cases of adult elevated blood lead levels are workplace-related.[11] High blood levels are associated with delayed puberty in girls.[12] Lead has been shown many times to permanently reduce the cognitive capacity of children at extremely low levels of exposure.[13] There appears to be no detectable lower limit, below which lead has no effect on cognition. In the 20th century, the use of lead in paint pigments was sharply reduced because of the danger of lead poisoning, especially to children.[14][15][16] By the mid-1980s, a significant shift in lead end-use patterns had taken place. Much of this shift was a result of the U.S. lead consumers' compliance with environmental regulations that significantly reduced or eliminated the use of lead in non- battery products, including gasoline, paints, solders, and water systems. Lead use is being further curtailed by the European Union's RoHS directive. Lead may still be found in harmful quantities in stoneware, vinyl (such as that used for tubing and the insulation of electrical cords), and brass manufactured in China. Between 2006 and 2007 many children's toys made in China were recalled, primarily due to lead in paint used to color the product. Older houses may still contain substantial amounts of lead paint. White lead paint has been withdrawn from sale in industrialized countries, but the yellow lead chromate is still in use; for example, Holland Colours Holcolan Yellow. Old paint should not be stripped by sanding, as this produces inhalable dust. Lead salts used in pottery glazes have on occasion caused poisoning, when acidic drinks, such as fruit juices, have leached lead ions out of the glaze.[17] It has been suggested that what was known as "Devon colic" arose from the use of lead-lined presses to extract apple juice in the manufacture of cider. Lead is considered to be particularly harmful for women's ability to reproduce. For that reason, many universities do not hand out lead-containing samples to women for instructional laboratory analyses.[citation needed] Lead(II) acetate (also known as sugar of lead) was used by the Roman Empire as a sweetener for wine, and some consider this to be the cause of the dementia that affected many of the Roman Emperors.[18] Lead as a soil contaminant is a widespread issue, since lead is present in natural deposits and may also enter soil through (leaded) gasoline leaks fromunderground storage tanks or through a wastestream of lead paint or lead grindings from certain industrial operations. Lead can also be found listed as a criteria pollutant in the United States Clean Air Act section 108. Lead that is emitted into the atmosphere can be inhaled, or it can be ingested after it settles out of the air. It is rapidly absorbed into the bloodstream and is believed to have adverse effects on the central nervous system, the cardiovascular system, kidneys, and the immune system.[19] [edit]Biochemistry of lead poisoning In the human body, lead inhibits porphobilinogen synthase and ferrochelatase, preventing both porphobilinogen formation and the incorporation of iron intoprotoporphyrin IX, the final step in heme synthesis. This causes ineffective heme synthesis and subsequent microcytic anemia.[citation needed] At lower levels, it acts as a calcium analog, interfering with ion channels during nerve conduction. This is one of the mechanisms by which it interferes with cognition. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... A heavy, silvery d-block metal, mercury is one of six elements that are liquid at or nearroom temperature and pressure.[2][3] The others are the elements caesium, francium, gallium, bromine, andrubidium. Of the metals, only mercury is liquid at standard conditions for temperature and pressure with themelting point of ?38.83?C and the boiling point of 356.73?C, making it one of the narrowest liquid range of any metals. Mercury is used in thermometers, barometers, manometers, sphygmomanometers, float valves, and other scientific apparatus, though concerns about the element's toxicity have led to mercury thermometers and sphygmomanometers being largely phased out in clinical environments in favour ofalcohol-filled, digital, or thermistor-based instruments. It remains in use in a number of other ways in scientific and scientific research applications, and in amalgam material for dental restoration. Mercury is mostly obtained by reduction from the mineral cinnabar. Electricity is passed through mercury vapor to produce short-wave ultraviolet light which then causes the phosphor coated on the inside of the tube to fluoresce, making visible light. Mercury occurs in deposits throughout the world. It is harmless in an insoluble form, such as mercuric sulfide[citation needed], but mercury poisoning can result from exposure to soluble forms (such as mercuric chloride or methylmercury), inhalation of mercury vapour, or eating fish contaminated with mercury. Safety See also: Mercury poisoning Mercury and most of its compounds are extremely toxic and are generally handled with care; in cases of spills involving mercury (such as from certainthermometers or fluorescent light bulbs) specific cleaning procedures are used to avoid toxic exposure.[44] It can be inhaled and absorbed through the skin and mucous membranes, so containers of mercury are securely sealed to avoid spills and evaporation. Heating of mercury, or compounds of mercury that may decompose when heated, are always carried out with adequate ventilation in order to avoid exposure to mercury vapor. The most toxic forms of mercury are itsorganic compounds, such as dimethylmercury and methylmercury. Mercury can cause both chronic and acute poisoning. Amando Kapauan was among the first to look into the problem of mercury in the environment, and he designed the appropriate equipment for mercury analysis in water, fish, and soil. [edit]Occupational exposure Due to the health effects of mercury exposure, industrial and commercial uses are regulated in many countries. The World Health Organization, OSHA, and NIOSHall treat mercury as an occupational hazard, and have established specific occupational exposure limits. Environmental releases and disposal of mercury are regulated in the U.S. primarily by the United States Environmental Protection Agency. Case control studies have shown effects such as tremors, impaired cognitive skills, and sleep disturbance in workers with chronic exposure to mercury vapour even at low concentrations in the range 0.7?42 ?g/m3.[45][46] A study has shown that acute exposure (4?8 hours) to calculated elemental mercury levels of 1.1 to 44 mg/m3 resulted in chest pain, dyspnea, cough, hemoptysis, impairment of pulmonary function, and evidence of interstitial pneumonitis.[47] Acute exposure to mercury vapor has been shown to result in profound central nervous system effects, including psychotic reactions characterized by delirium, hallucinations, and suicidal tendency. Occupational exposure has resulted in broad-ranging functional disturbance, including erethism, irritability, excitability, excessive shyness, and insomnia. With continuing exposure, a fine tremor develops and may escalate to violent muscular spasms. Tremor initially involves the hands and later spreads to the eyelids, lips, and tongue. Long-term, low-level exposure has been associated with more subtle symptoms of erethism, including fatigue, irritability, loss of memory, vivid dreams, and depression.[48][49] =============================================== Apple Recycling at Goodwill of Southwestern PA Apple Outreach with Hosanna Industries Apple User Groups from the Pittsburgh area PGHMAC.COM website by Nathan Brentzel Dave Sevick and Bob Donaldson dave at davesevick.com - 724-779-0099 radonaldson at mac.com - 412-477-9188 ----- Peter Carras and Marty Swartz pcarras+PAUGC1 at pitt.edu - 724-327-5870 marty.swartz at gmail.com - 412-818-8096 As Apple users in Pittsburgh, we are taking local action to keep the environment free from e-waste ..... =============================================== -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... The phrase may refer to the component which is dumped or disposed or discarded rather than recycled, including residue from reuse and recycling operations. Because loads of surplus electronics are frequently commingled (good, recyclable, and nonrecyclable), several public policy advocates apply the term "e-waste" broadly to all surplus electronics. The processing of electronic waste in developing countries causes serious health and pollution problems due to lack of containment, as do unprotected landfilling (due to leaching) and incineration. The Basel Convention and regulation by the European Union and individual United States aim to reduce these problems. Reuse and computer recycling are promoted as alternatives to disposal as trash. Despite this, while some people are able to get times similar to those advertised by Apple, others are frustrated with their experiences of these runtimes being truncated by at least an hour from the advertised times, even on brand-new machines. This is mainly due to a difference in Apple's testing conditions versus the way an average user will run the laptop. It's best to consider the advertised battery times as being at the very high end of what's achievable, since in Apple's tests the environmental and computing conditions are optimal, and the batteries are fresh. There are many factors that can contribute to battery performance, including age, usage, calibration, environmental factors, and overall load. When someone goes to a cafe or library and browses the Internet while listening to music, even with seemingly minimal load on the computer, many tasks are performed that can quickly drain the battery. Bright screens and running multiple applications are just a few tasks that can affect battery life. Tips for basic computer usage For basic computer usage, here are some tips for how to run the computer to lengthen the battery life. This involves minimizing the computing experience, but if done correctly, you can increase the battery runtime, and sometimes well above the advertised times. 1. Turn off Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. If they're not needed, turn off wireless technologies, since these will consume battery power to both broadcast and receive wireless signals. This will not only disable the hardware (or at least put it in a low-power mode), it will also prevent the system from running driver tasks to control these devices. If networking is required, you should use an Ethernet connection, if available. 2. Dim the screen. The screen is one of the largest battery drainers in the system, and we recommend that you dim the screen as much as possible. Ideally, you should run the screen on the first brightness setting for the best battery life. This can take some getting used to, but the difference in the time yield between minimal brightness and full brightness can be hours. 3. Turn off the screen when pausing work. Depending on what's being done on the computer, there may be times where you are thinking about your work, or not actively looking at the screen and interacting with the computer. This can be for a few seconds or minutes, but one habit that will increase the battery life is to fully dim the display when not in use. For instance, before taking a break to stretch or chat with people, hit the dim key until the screen turns off completely. Then only brighten the screen enough to do the next few tasks and dim it again when done with those tasks. This habit can greatly increase the battery runtime. 4. Turn off keyboard backlighting. As with the display, the backlight on the keyboard should be turned off unless you absolutely need it, and then only turn it on minimally. 5. Put computer in sleep mode when taking long breaks. Avoid turning off the computer, since booting it up will drain the battery. Instead, if you are taking a break from you work for 5 to 10 minutes, put the computer in sleep mode. This can be done via the "Apple" menu, or can also be done by pressing the power button followed by the "s" key when the shutdown options appear. This may be a slightly faster way of performing this task than using the menus. 6. Optimize System Preferences settings. In the "Energy Saver" System Preferences, you should switch over to "Better Battery Life" graphics when running on the battery (for newer MacBook Pros), and also check the option to put the hard disks to sleep whenever possible. There are several additional system settings that can increase battery life: Turn off Spotlight by deselecting all items in the "Search Results" list of the Spotlight System Preferences. Turn off "Automatically adjust brightness..." in the "Displays" System Preferences. Disable screen hot corners (accessible in the "Screen Saver" or "Expose" System Preferences) to prevent accidental activation. Avoid using Spaces, Expose, or Dashboard. If you have already activated Dashboard, you can quit by restarting the Dock. To do this, enter the following command in the Terminal: killall Dock Disable the infrared remote control receiver in the "Security" System Preferences. Turn off unnecessary sharing services. 6. Disconnect peripheral devices Any peripheral device will take some power to run, and we recommend you minimize the use of these devices. USB mice, hard drives, and even thumbdrives all will take some energy to run, and as such, will lower the runtime of the computer. In addition, avoid using the CD/DVD drive. 7. Turn off unnecessary applications. Any open application will take up additional CPU cycles. Any antivirus programs, media players, menu widgets, and utilities that you have installed will use CPU cycles, and we recommend you quit these applications while on the battery. Minimize Web browsing, and when you're done viewing a Web page, close the browser window. Tips for battery maintenance Beyond optimizing how you run the computer when on the battery, there are some ways you can help keep your batteries as healthy as possible. The following tips should ensure longevity of your batteries. 1. Regularly calibrate the battery While batteries do lose their capacity with usage, they will also die over time without usage. This doesn't mean you should use the battery all the time, but it is good to periodically run it down to ensure it's being fully used on a regular basis. Regardless of use, we recommend you regularly calibrate the battery (once every 1 to 2 months), which will not only ensure the battery is being used, but will also set the computer to properly determine the remaining time left in the battery. To calibrate the battery, you will have to charge it up fully and then allow it to fully drain. More on calibration can be found in this Apple knowledgebase article: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1490 2. Reset system management controller The system management controller helps power management in the computer, and if there is corruption in the SMC's settings, it can potentially drain the battery faster than normal. Reference this article for instructions on resetting the SMC for a particular MacBook model: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1411 More information: Apple has a few resources on its computer batteries, including some additional information and tips on batteries in portable devices. http://www.apple.com/batteries/ http://www.apple.com/batteries/replacements.html http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1519 http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1490 http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2332 Dave -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... In Feb - July 2002 I was invited to participate in the first ever roll-out of a massive state-wide Apple laptop and wireless Airport Network initiative in Maine. We had a small team of Apple consultants based in Freeport, Maine that would get daily marching orders to engineer wireless networks in all the 250+ Middle Schools in every single corner of Maine. It was a technical and cultural experience I will never forget. We set up networks on Native American Indian reservations with families that lived in homes no bigger than the sheds in our back yards attending one room schools that could double as a modest home from the 1930's ..... .... on up to large coastal school districts with fiber-optic cabling in all buildings. The contrast was stark. Seven years later in 2009 they are still reaping the benefits of the bold educational initiative pioneered by then Govenor Angus King ( see photo ) and the rest is history in the making. Way to go Maine !!!! You guys rock !!!!! Maybe Pennsylvania will follow your lead ? Maine to more than double its Apple MacBook program to 100,000 students Thursday, March 12, 2009 - 05:46 PM EDT "Maine is expanding its program to provide laptop computers to 100,000 students," David Sharpe reports for The Associated Press. "The goal is to provide a laptop to every public school student in grades seven through 12 by the fall, adding 53,000 high schoolers to the program, saidEducation Commissioner Susan Gendron." "Gov. John Baldacci hinted at an expansion of the laptop computer program in his State of the State address Tuesday night, and Education Department officials announced Wednesday that they?re negotiating a four-year lease with Apple Inc. for 100,000 Apple MacBook laptops," Sharpe reports. "Maine started its first-in-the-nation program by distributing more than 30,000 computers to each seventh- and eighth-grader in all of the state?s state public schools in 2002 and 2003," Sharpe reports. "About 30 high schools also have laptops that they obtained outside the scope of the original program. Now, all 120 of Maine?s high schools, along with 241 middle schools, will have new laptops under the same program at a cost of about $242 per computer per year, Gendron said." "The state hasn?t yet completed its negotiations with Apple, but it?s expected that the new lease will cost the state about $25 million per year, said David Connerty-Marin, an Education Department spokesman," Sharpe reports. "The state now pays about $13 million per year to provide Apple laptops to 37,000 middle-schoolers and about 10,000 middle school and high school teachers and administrators." Sharpe reports, "A study released in 2007 by the Maine Education Policy Research Institute at the University of Southern Maine indicated writing scores improved after laptops were introduced." http://www.bangordailynews.com/detail/101299.html Laptop program to expand in grades 7-12 ```````````````````````````` Dave Sevick Consulting Apple Certified Support Professional 10.5 Apple User Group Ambassador Apple Recycling in Pittsburgh Helping people use technology in Pittsburgh Western PA, WV, OH, MD ... Today was another great day. We refurbished 24 Macs to increase our all-time refurbished total to 1,786. We only had to de-manufacture four Macs into components for recycling. We're still working on the 400-Mac donation from the Keystone Oaks School District, which took very good care of their computers. They have a very low failure rate. If you run into a Keystone Oaks board member or administrator, please tell them thanks. For those of you who may be looking for a good G4 Tower capable of running Leopard, we be working on an excellent candidate next Friday. It's a Mirror Drive Door Tower with a SuperDrive AND a Combo Drive, an 80 gb hard drive, and over a gig of RAM. We'll be testing a 17-inch flat panel ADC Apple Studio Display to pair with it. This is NOT the model with 800 FireWire. If all goes well, it will be in the store by the end of the day. We'll have another work day next Friday, March 20. Hope to see you there! Robert A. But the whole country pays a price, as well, because less lending leads to fewer jobs and lower spending, which leads to less lending -- a vicious cycle that delays our recovery. And small businesses don't just provide jobs -- they provide the innovations that help us lead in the global economy. Smaller companies produce 13 times more patents per employee than large companies. Now, think about it. Hewlett-Packard began in a garage. It was a small business. Donaldson) Date: Fri, 20 Mar 2009 20:56:28 -0400 Subject: [NPMUG] Goodwill CRC update, March 20 Message-ID: Dear Mac friends: Many thanks to Charlie Hutchens, Rich Fitzgibbon, John Hamill, Tucker Trainor, Bob Wray, John Bauerlein, Dave Sevick and especially Charles Firth for joining me at the Goodwill Computer Recycling Center today. Today was kind of like hanging out with Obi-Wan, as Charles Firth revamped our Xserve to enhance our disk imaging process and ended up solving other problems for which we had no idea solutions existed. Gather around the campfire gang, and listen to Charles tell us the fabled tale of the Mysteries of the Open Firmware reset, which may solve all kinds of CD and network booting issues. Let Woz Dance with the Stars; we got to boogie with Charles... It was also a crowded day at the lunch table :-) Otherwise, it was one of those 50-50 days for us. We refurbished 11 Macs bringing our all-time total to 1,796. We also de-manufactured 11 dead Macs into parts for recycling. Three Macs were re-imaged that had been returned to the Goodwill ComputerWorks store. We'll have another work day next Friday, March 27. Hope to see you there! Robert A. The problem seems to effect 2.0 dual but I cannot start my computer. It does not chime and repeatedly blinks 3 times. This is identified on a troubleshooting page as bad ram. However this is the ram that has been in use for 5 years. Reading another discussion the opinion there says that the heating and cooling of the motherboard causes a solder joint to fail where the DIMM slots connect to the board. Is there anyone out there who has reasonably priced ideas about repair? My thinking is using a heating process to re-flow the solder. I recall hearing about this but is it at all practical or should I sell it for parts and move on? There is still snow in the yard and the roads are muddy but winter is over. The signs of spring are evident from the Robin I spotted in my yard this morning to the crocus buds pushing through the snow. The river is high but the gradual warming has limited the ice jams and we have not had any serious flooding yet (knocking heavily on my wood desk). With spring comes some heightened activity on our annual Earth Day eWaste recycling day, which will be April 18th this year. We have moved the event to the local high school because last year we pretty much shut down the whole area with traffic as cars were backed up in both directions with people waiting patiently to drop off their ewaste. This year we have support from Apple, Ben & Jerry's, Green Mountain Coffee, SymQuest, 7th Generation, Chittenden Bank, Canon, Chroma Technology, the Chittenden Solid Waste District and our new recycling partner WeRecycle. WeRecycle is one of only a handful of eWaste recyclers that has signed the Basel Action Network's e-Stewards Recycler's Pledge of True Stewardship and has met the strict BAN criteria for ewaste recycling. (e-Stewards website: www.e-stewards.org ) We collected over 130 tons of eWaste last year in our 4-hour event, making it the largest one-day event in the USA. This volume also allowed us to be the first and only electronics retailer to be able to claim that we recycle more ewaste than we sell each year. I am proud to report that the Vermont Retail Association gave us the Greentailer of the Year award yesterday at a ceremony and lunch in Burlington. We are very proud to be recognized for our commitment to one of our bottom lines--planet! Apple announced the iPhone 3.0 software on Tuesday and the new features include much-desired options such as tethering (using your iPhone as a modem for your Mac), cut and paste, open core location (permitting turn-by-turn GPS) and MMS support. With over 100 new features and 1000 new APIs for developers, this is a major advancement in the iPhone and iPod touch platform that will make it even more compelling and will open the door for additional devices to take advantage of the power and versatility of the software, App Store and Apple's hardware (more below). And just in case you were wondering, nope, we still are not allowed to sell the iPhone. It is a constant source of customer inquiry and frustration. It is somewhat unbelievable that Apple feels that a customer would have a better experience at Walmart or Best Buy than at Small Dog Electronics or the other Apple Specialists. We will keep asking, pleading and cajoling Apple and perhaps one of these days, they will see the light. MAC TREAT #77: Get in Character By Kali Hilke Ever wonder where those pesky specials characters that aren't written on your keyboard (e.g. ??, ??, ??, ?"?) are when you're writing? They're all listed in Character Palette--part of OS X. Easy access can be found either as a part of your other Apple Apps (such as Mail, TextEdit, Stickies, etc.) or in the International panel of System Preferences. (System Preferences > International > Input Menu) If you find that you use these symbols a fair amount and would like to see them quickly, check the Character Palette checkbox and "Show input menu in menu bar." The latter will display a little flag icon in the top righthand corner of your menu bar (how patriotic!). Another tip for finding some symbols that you use more than others is to remember the keyboard shortcuts. Here's a cheatsheet for my most popular ones: * Accent Acute (??): Option-E * Bullet (?EUR?): Option-8 * Cent (??): Option-4 * Copyright (??): Option-G * Degree (?s(): Option-K * Registered (??): Option-R * Trade Mark (?"?): Option-2 And, for Mac users, one we've mentioned before and use a lot of: * Apple symbol (???): Shift-Option-K Note that fonts may handle characters differently! iPhone 3.0 Updates By Kali Hilke At Tuesday's iPhone 3.0 event in Cupertino, CA, Apple announced changes to the iPhone software and a new version of the Apple Developer Kit. Here's a rundown of what we can expect: For End-Users * Cut and Paste capabilities. To copy and select, users will double-tap (or tap and drag to select longer parts of text) and then paste. It will work between applications. * Spotlight searching.* Big news! Now you can search your Mail: To, From, Subject and Entire Message, just like in Apple Mail. Calendar, Notes and even iPod will support the search feature as well. * Landscape Orientation. All main applications will be able to support landscape orientation. Safari already features this, as well as many other third-party apps. (My husband will definitely appreciate this since he hates the small typepad!) * MMS (Multimedia Messaging Service) support. Users will be able to send and receive photos, audio files and contact info. Plus, the new Messages application will be able to forward and delete messages (either individually or multiples) in addition to its MMS support. * Shake-to-Shuffle. Now, shaking your iPhone or iPod touch will shuffle your music--a key feature in the iPod nano and iPod shuffle. Other features include automatic updating, networking/sharing between iPhones/iPod touches (see below), Parental Controls, YouTube enhancements and more. It's also been reported that the iPhone also will be able to support new accessories, such as FM transmitters. See Apple's iPhone OS page here. Read Apple's press release here. * Available this summer (no further details at this time) * Free for iPhone users; $10 for iPod touch users For Developers * More than 1,000 programming interfaces for the iPhone. That way, they'll have more ways to create feature-rich applications for the App Store. * Peer to Peer Connectivity, This new framework allows any application to communicate between devices using Bluetooth. Gamers will be able to add a multi-player experience and others will be able to share data between devices. * Apple Push Notification service. Apple is now allowing third-party apps to utilize their "push" service--users will be alerted to new information even when the application isn't running. * See the full list of features in the iPhone SDK here. We'll update with more info as soon as we hear it! Single Payer: The Economic Recovery Solution to Health Care Reform By Don Mayer START SOAPBOX There is a lot of talking going on about reforming the way health care is delivered in this country and how solving this dilemma is an essential part of our economic recovery. Unfortunately, the one solution that will do the most to reform health care is not on the table. This is single-payer health care. In a single payer system, one entity--usually the government--acts as the "payer" for health care. This is medicare for all--the most efficient government run health care system in the world. That may come as a surprise, but the administrative burden in medicare is a few orders of magnitude lower than the burden of our private system. Similar to most of the industrialized world, each American would be entitled to comprehensive health care. All hospitals, doctors, nurse practitioners, nurses and other health care providers would bill one entity for their services. Care would be based upon need, not upon the ability to pay, what kind of job you have or if you have insurance. Hospital billing would be eliminated. Instead, hospitals would have an annual lump sum global budget. Medical providers would either receive a fee-for-service, salary or negotiated fee. Where we now have gigantic billing departments at hospitals, at doctor's offices and at insurance companies who sent out those difficult to understand EOBs. Under a single payer program, much of this overhead and administrative burden would be eliminated. We are already using public financing to pay for over 50% of the cost of health care via medicare, medicaid, government employees and local government taxes (i.e. school taxes). A single payer plan would save over $150 billion in administrative costs according to a GAO report in 2002. Further, a report by the Congressional Budget Office projected that single payer would reduce the total health care cost by $225 Billion by 2004--despite the expansion of comprehensive coverage to everyone. There simply is no other plan that provides this type of savings and this type of universal coverage. The notion of mandates on individuals or companies does not save this money and the loopholes will be abundant. The Band-Aids that are being considered maintain a huge dispersed bureaucracy to handle collections and payment and will not provide the savings, much less the universal care that everyone professes to desire. How does this relate to economic recovery? The single most uncontrollable element of overhead is health insurance. The automakers are saddled with health care costs that represent a great cost in the value of a car than the steel it is made from. The cost to cover an employee and family exceeds the minimum wage in many states. When I started in business, I was able to cover an employee and their family for $1500 a year. Now, that same coverage (actually, inferior coverage) costs over $14,000! The most common source of labor strife is health care costs as employers try to push more of this cost burden onto their employees through higher deductibles, co-pays and premiums. Worse yet, the system is voluntary and an employer can simply drop coverage or reduce benefits without recourse. In fact, it might be a competitive advantage in seeking business. If your overhead is lower because a company does not offer its employees health insurance, it can bid lower for business. Economic recovery will be significantly hampered and slowed if we do not address health care reform and I applaud President Obama for recognizing this fact. I find, however, his reluctance to even give single-payer consideration to be short-sighted and dooming health care reform to 'fiddling around the edges.' It is time to join the rest of the industrialized world and adopt universal health care with a single-payer health care system. Of the 27 industrialized nations in the world, only one does not guarantee its citizens universal access to comprehensive health care. That one is the USA and resolving that is one of the first steps to full economic recovery. END SOAPBOX REVIEW: 4 Door Media RoadMice Wireless Mouse By Art Hendrickson While at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Don came across a booth with an assortment of officially licensed mice in the shape of popular automobiles. Upon returning to our world headquarters, the RoadMice flyer he grabbed was tossed on my desk with orders to bring them in. Seeing the Concept Camaros, Dodge Chargers, Ford Mustangs, and Corvettes online didn't do this neat input device justice. These mice are very close in look and scale as the real life autos they mimic. We have chosen a few colors for each of the cars, including a Highway Patrol badged Chevy Concept Camaro. While the real thing may be a gas guzzler, the RoadMice are not battery guzzlers! The RoadMice Mouse automatically goes into battery save mode when left idle for a few minutes. Each mouse has its own VIN number, and when you register online, one is granted access to an official Certificate of Title as if you had just been to the DMV. I printed mine out and am planning on signing it over to the next owner someday. ;-) Using Radio Frequency wireless (it comes with a USB dongle), the mouse is easy to connect once you install the two AAA batteries and find the little switch on the bottom to turn it on. After syncing the mouse to the dongle, I was mousing wirelessly within minutes of opening the package. These are fully Mac/PC compatible. The two-button RoadMice also have working headlights. Click the left side button and the left headlight comes on, etc. The scroll wheel also lights up when used. The smooth functionality of this 800 DPI optical wireless mouse is much appreciated thus far, and most people who've seen these agree that they will be a hot seller. My new Atomic Orange Corvette has really souped up my computer, and I've already gotten used to cursor movements after just a day or two of use. There's always a slight delay in response compared to a wired equivalent, but as I say, it just takes a little getting used to, and is comparable with Apple's own wireless mice with regard to functionality. I made one adjustment to my iMac's System Preferences to allow the mouse to track a little more slowly to assure precise control. Although owning a new car may seem out of reach, I assure that you will not be disappointed with the milage you'll get if you obtain one of these great wireless mice from Small Dog Electronics. Most of us love cars, and what a great way to express who you are by getting your favorite model, and in such a great, functional replica! Phoning Home from SXSW By Ed Shepard For the past few days, I've been attending both the Interactive and Film Festivals at South By Southwest in Austin, Texas. It's been an inspiring, educational, and amazingly fun experience. This is the first extended trip I've taken with an iPhone 3G. It's proven to be far more useful than I ever expected, in almost every way. From getting around town, to keeping up to date with SXSW's complicated and ever-evolving schedule, to getting locations and reviews of restaurants, to staying on top of business at home, to taking notes, to updating and reading Twitter feeds, the iPhone has hardly left my hand. That became especially true when my digital camera inexplicably stopped working, leaving me with only the iPhone's built-in (and admittedly mediocre) camera. In a hyper-connected setting like SXSW, the iPhone (or iPod touch or other brand of powerful smartphone) is practically essential. For example, Twitter has usurped the role of business cards here. Don't get me wrong, cards are still exchanged at lightning speed and face-to-face time is as important as ever. Yet the ability to use your iPhone-Twitter-application-of-choice to instantly connect and follow other people and businesses has proved (to me) to be extremely useful. After this intense period of dedicated, on-the-spot use, I only have two complaints about the iPhone (and neither has to do with the lack of cut and paste). One is that the battery could be a lot better. At home it's easy to keep it charged up, and there have been plenty of open outlets and opportunities for charging here. However, there were two times when the battery was finally exhausted at the end of my day. We'll post a top ten tips for maximizing your iPhone's battery next week. In the meantime, before my next long trip I am definitely buying the TruePower iV Extended Battery and Portable Charger for iPhone 2G/3G and iPod touch It claims to offer up to 24 hours of talk time, is compact, and is very nicely built (in the USA no less). Second, I wish the iPhone had a better camera. The iPhone's camera is mostly "good enough," but it would be a revelation to have a three (or why not, five or seven) megapixel camera built in. A flash and the ability to capture video would be even better. Imagine being able to truly leave your digital camera at home! I did end up taking many iPhone photos since that was my only option. I enjoyed the option to instantly upload these to my Flickr page. I have to admit, there were a couple late-night instant uploads I deleted first thing the morning after. Another nice feature of the TruePower iV Extended Battery for iPhone is that it actually has a built in flash. I'm definitely getting one before my next trip! It has been over 12 years of Kibbles and I am glad to see some new readers. I had one long-time friend subscribe and he wondered how long I have been writing this newsletter; he then went on to correct me about my horse. It turns out it was not a Belgian, but a Percheron. It was a very large horse and in addition to sugaring with her, she cleared my entire lot, pulling huge loads of logs that I cut down. She was a bit cantankerous and when I would ride her, she would immediately head for the nearest low hanging branch. Thanks for reading this issue of Kibbles & Bytes! Donaldson) Date: Fri, 27 Mar 2009 18:16:37 -0400 Subject: [NPMUG] Goodwill CRC update, March 27 Message-ID: Dear Mac friends: Many thanks to Charlie Hutchens, Rich Fitzgibbon, John Hamill, Tucker Trainor, and Bob Wray, for joining me at the Goodwill Computer Recycling Center today. Today was an ugly day on the work benches. We ended up nuking more Macs than we fixed, despite spending a lot of time trying to raise the dead. We de-manufactured 13 Macs, and refurbished 10. We re-imaged two returns to the ComputerWorks store. Six of the 10 were OS 9 tray-load iMacs, which have been out-of-stock at the store for two weeks. Our all-time total of refurbished Macs is now 1,808. We'll have another work day next Friday, April 3. Hope to see you there! Robert A. I know a lot of long time Mac users still use AppleWorks for these reasons. If you are still using Appleworks, this is worth a look. Recycling collection points are at the major Allegheny County parks, through April 11. More details are online at: http://www.wpahumane.org/ http://www.wpahumane.org/recycle.html - Peter --- Peter L. Message-ID: List Friends, I have an iMac model 4,1 vintage 2006 or 2007, running 10.4.11 on a 2 GHz intel Core Duo, with 1 GB 667 MHz ram. Three school age kids and spousal use is pushing me toward getting a second computer (other than the Windows-based, Lenovo laptop that I bring from work which has severe limitations imposed on it by the IT gods of my employer) -- and a Mac it will be. The questions I have include: Recommendations on another iMac versus a laptop MacBook -- My own bias is for a desktop as I have this sense that laptops are more vulnerable to damage and I fear my kids taking it places I can't find! I may just be too 'old school' and should see things differently. My kids would want the MacBook, but that kinda drives me away from it. :-( Possibly, I need an adjustment in perspective ... Your experiences on these matters would be greatly appreciated! In either case, recommendations for a model that would suit second family computer needs (lots of internet, lots of documents, lots of email, lots of photos, lots of music -- sound familiar to any of you out there?). Should I upgrade to 10.5 on my existing machine to better interact with a new one? How does one handle email (a huge usage on the current machine) with two different machines? Any other recommendations for a 2 Mac family? Finally, I am looking for recommendations on a printer. I have a Canon Pixma MP500. It is not wireless/bluetooth. I'd like to move in the Bluetooth or wireless direction. I have a wired & wireless network at home (though I confess to being less than facile with it). I see lots out there, but honestly, with kids printing, cost of ink becomes a real issue. I'd love to find a solution for everyday, mainly B&W printing that gives cost efficiency, but (even with a second printer for this latter task) have available a very good photo- quality full color printer, with easy scanning/copying capability (don't need fax). Any recommendations here would also be appreciated. Thanks for any and all comments a d suggestions! Ralph -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... IMAP allows you to keep the mail on the server, so if you read or delete mail from one machine it will show on the other keeps everything in sync. First you will have to find out if your email provider supports IMAP. It has been detected by various antivirus companies and unfortunately it is suspected to become active tomorrow (April 1st, 2009) so currently there is little known about what it will do. Fortunately for most Mac users, this worm is Windows-only, so there shouldnt be any problems. However, many Mac owners have windows or windows-compatible environments running on thier systems in the forms of Virtual Machines (Parallels and VMware) as well as direct installations via Bootcamp. In addition, there are several windows emulation environments such as Codeweaver's Crossover which will run windows programs directly on your mac, and may allow the worm to execute. Given the concern about this threat, we strongly recommend you install and run antivirus software on your windows installations. In addition, while this threat does not yet affect OS X, you may consider running a virus scanning package on your mac as well to prevent spreading the malware to Windows users. Be sure to also fully update your Windows installations, since Microsoft has recently released patches to help tackle this threat.
