(Dave will remember me refusing to buy a first- gen MacBook Pro, instead opting to "wait for Santa Rosa") If you've ever met anyone who's got Windows XP running on a machine with 4GB installed, only to see Windows report a mere 3.2GB, here's why. Anyway, I thought the ad was funny in a way Steve Jobs would never and could never be funny. "Microsoft plans to hire 155 "gurus" by the end of the year to work in Circuit City, Best Buy and other retailers to help customers pick out PCs, said Eric Hollreiser of Microsoft - presumably the way Seinfeld helped Gates pick out shoes." So my impression of the response is like Charles's, "Wow," but for a different reason. This program sounds extremely similar to the Apple Power Rep program of 2000 where Apple hired their own in-store reps to promote Apple products. I was one of those reps. It'll be interesting, from my perspective, how well MS can carry it off. Windows, which was installed on my previous machine (a MacBook with the Intel chip of course), went into a folder called ?Files from . . . ? and appears no longer to be operational. I have not ?experimented? to see why this is the case for fear of mucking something up. I have AppleCare and can certainly call them but thought I?d try the list first. See attached image I ?grabbed.? 2. Another problem that?s reared its head ? every time I plug in my jump drive or iPod, a virus scan program starts up. It seems to me to be some lost remnant of some version of a Norton program, but I cannot find it anywhere on my machine and I am reluctant to start hacking and whacking at preference files and such. Nothing in applications, nothing pops under recent items when it runs ? nothing in system preferences. VERY strange. Image also attached. Guidance on either of these most appreciated! First, many thanks to those of you who hit me off-line with ideas, especially Peter Carras and Dick Henderson, who wrote me several times and shared great ideas on my Norton/Symantec problem. I am still working on the Windows problem, but here is what I learned on Norton/Symantec: * Apparently, because I am a long-time Mac user and migrated user accounts from a PowerPc machine to Intel along the way, remnants of Norton/Symantec programs (SystemWorks and NAV) remained ?buried? in my Library and System folders. * For some strange reason, while transferring my user accounts to my latest Intel machine using FireWire (as I have done several times in the past), some of these random elements were ?turned on? once again. * Running Norton uninstallers DID NOT remove the random elements. * These files WERE NOT seen by Spotlight. * Using a Console log, I identified some of the pieces. * Ultimately, I had to go through Library and System carefully to remove some folders and files. I DO NOT like opening the hood of my Mac and ripping off random pieces of the engine, but that?s essentially what it came down to in the end. I will report later on my Windows conversion experience (see below). As an aside, I think there?s consensus on the list that the latest Jobs announcement was not a big deal, but I must tell you I was calling Apple support in the last few days following the announcement and have experienced something I have never have before with regard to call volume ? not a long wait time, but complete DISCONNECTION on multiple occasions. Very strange. In any case, with all the help I got, I have to say that once again, the value of this list and the people on it has been personally demonstrated to me. Thanks for your help, everyone. There are call centers and repair facilities around the globe, but phone support is pretty local relative to the support systems for many corporations: all calls originating in North America stay in North America, and are not redirected to facilities on the other side of the globe. For mail-in repair needs in the United States and Canada, PowerBooks and MacBook Pros go to a facility in Houston, TX that took a direct hit from Hurricane Ike last week. The repair facility, located at 7909 Northcourt Road in Houston (check it out on Google Street View at maps.google.com), only reopened today with limited staff and generator power. It?s not an available option for repair until further notice, which doesn?t affect us too much as we do most of our repairs in-house, but it does affect customers who are far from an authorized service provider or some of our customers whose machines require a trip to the depot. Apple has warned that turnaround times will be adversely affected. Small Dog sends our best wishes to everyone affected by the recent storms. -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... We find ourselves in the delightful position of having people interested in our OS 9 tray-load iMacs models. We will have a visit in the morning from a representative of a day care center seeking affordable computers with software suitable for young children. Which, of course, is us. We'll be putting a couple of these models on our bench for refurbishing first thing in the morning, and we expect to be able to allow our visitors to take a test drive when they arrive around 10:00 a.m. Our first volunteer normally arrives about 8:30 a.m. and we work until 4:00-4:30 with a break for lunch. You're welcome to arrive and leave at any time convenient for you. Entrance to the building is on the South 26th St. side of the building. Go past the reception desk and make a left at the first hallway. Go down the hall into the large room where Goodwill clients are disassembling Windows PCs. We're on the far right side of the room, next to the windows. Hope to see you there! Robert A. Today's tally was 22 Macs, bringing our all-time total to 1,463 Macs rehabilitated. We now have sufficient completed inventory on hand at Goodwill that can establish entire classrooms of iMacs or eMacs for bargain prices through Goodwill's ComputerWorks store. The link to the survey is http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.asp?u=474083573223 . A few words about the survey: It?s very short ? it contains only 17 questions and takes about 5 minutes to complete. It?s completely anonymous and confidential. It serves non-commercial, academic purposes only. We are depending on the good will of Mac users - without you we cannot do this research. Do you think that you could possibly forward this link to the N P M U G members? We evaluate whether recent improvements in desktop search have changed this fundamental aspect of Personal Information Management (PIM). We tested this in two studies using the same questionnaire: (a) The Windows Study - a longitudinal comparison of Google Desktop and Windows XP Search Companion, and (b) The Mac Study - a large scale comparison of Mac Spotlight and Sherlock. There were few effects for improved search. First, regardless of search engine, there was a strong navigation preference: on average, users estimated that they used navigation for 56-68% of file retrieval events but searched for only 4-15% of events. Second, the effect of improving the quality of the search engine on search usage was limited and inconsistent. Third, search was used mainly as a last resort when users could not remember file location. Finally, there was no evidence that using improved desktop search engines leads people to change their filing habits to become less reliant on hierarchical file organization. We conclude by offering theoretical explanations for navigation preference, relating to differences between PIM and Internet retrieval, and suggest alternative design directions for PIM systems. Today's tally was 15 Macs, bringing our all-time total to 1,479 Macs rehabilitated. Among the choice Macs sent to Goodwill's ComputerWorks store today were a top-of-the-line eMac 1.42 ghz and a 15-inch G4 iMac 800 mhz with AirPort. A couple of 1.2 ghz eMacs were also in the mix. All these Macs are capable of running OS X.5 Leopard. Today's Patience of Job Award goes to Rich FitzGibbon, who single- handedly replaced the Combo CD in a 1.2 mhz eMac and the hard drive in the 1.42 mhz eMac. Without losing any screws. Or saying bad words while he worked. We salute you! :-) On the down side, we sent nine DOA eMacs and six iMacs to their greater reward in the Heavyside Layer of recycling. So we batted .500 today... We'll gather at Goodwill again next Friday, October 3. Robert A. It's bad enough they (like all ISPs) offer speeds "up tp" XMbps. But unlimited use was/is standard. In other words, I can't sell you a "complete vacation package deal that covers flight, hotel, rental car, and food" and then tell you the cost of the rental car and hotel isn't included. And worse, that you're not permitted to rent the car or you'll risk losing the flight. When was the last time you saw any ISP commercial say there was a cap on how much you can use it? We haven't seen such a thing since the old AOL "750 free hours" nonsense. To be clear -this isn't about "bandwidth" at all - bandwidth is how "fat" your pipe is - how much data you can pull/push at a time - usually something like "8Mbps down, 2Mbps up" or similar. We've all got bandwidth caps, due to both technical limitations and corporate/ financial ones. Unlimited bandwidth isn't possible thanks to physics. Instead, this is about total use - if you purchase a cable modem contract that allows 8Mbps download and you use it at full capacity for 1 hour - that's 28800Mb, or 3600MB (there are 8 bits in one byte). So, approx 3.6GB downloaded in one hour. Or one DVD disk-image. Those of us who download ISOs know this is about right. (And before you accuse me of being a "pirate", understand that ISO downloading is normal behavior for anyone who works closely with Microsoft's TechNet site. this is not unreasonable use.) This means a cap of 250GB translates to about 70 hours of use at full capacity. Funnily enough, I don't see Comcast's adverts saying you can have 'blazing fast' internet but only for 70 hours a month. I thought we ditched "metered internet" in the 80s. If Comcast's network can't handle the load of it's users actually using the service at the level that Comcast is selling it, they should stop selling it at that level. It's like over-selling tickets to a Pirate game, then telling season pass holders they can't come in because they've seen too many games already, and they need to let other people in. "Sorry you purchased a ticket, but we sold more tickets then the stadium can handle.. and you got to see the last game, so your total use of the stadium is preventing other, more casual, Pirate fans from enjoying the game. So you can't come in. No refunds." Comcast has the right to cap total use, or even cap bandwidth (that is, drop their connection speeds down to 3Mbps or whatever). In fact, Comcast has the right to do whatever they want, even turn off the "pipe" and get out of the ISP business all together. But to pretend this isn't a big deal, and something that existing Comcast customers shouldn't be upset about, is ridiculous. If Comcast can't provide their customers the service promised, they need to change the promise. Otherwise it's false advertising. And to enter into an agreement with a customer, and then change the "terms and conditions" to such an extent is irresponsible and border- line criminal. You can't change the terms and conditions to say "Well, I was paying you $50/month for unlimited internet access at a top speed of 8Mbps, and I've decided to change that to $20/month for unlimited access at 8Mbps. By opening this letter you've agreed to the new terms of our contract." Trade (you know, capitalism) is about "I'll give you X if you give me Y" - you can't agree to this, and then change the deal. Comcast is changing the deal, and hoping their customers will accept the "new terms and conditions" without a fight. Just because Comcast is a big corporation and not another human doesn't mean they have an inherent right to adjust the deal. Frankly, this is a class-action lawsuit begging to happen. And people wonder why the US is falling behind Europe and Asia when it comes to Internet connectivity. At first I thought it may be Verizon DSL so I checked it against a DELL PC I have connected to the same wireless router and Internet Explorer and iTunes there are significantly faster. I ran Symantec anti virus and came up with 14 spyware files which have been deleted.
