If you don't see something you're looking for, please ask. If you're a would-be Mac collector, leave us a list of what you're seeking, and we'll post it so items you want can be set aside before they are de- manufactured. The laptop boots up (I can hear it) but the screen cannot be seen unless a bright light is on in the room and then it is still extremely dark. This happened out of the blue last night on the way home from a trip. It worked fine yesterday morning prior to leaving the hotel. During the drive home I took it out of its case to play some games during the 5 hour car trip and I couldn't see anything at all. We were driving after dark. When I returned home I found I could vaguely see the screen if I was in a brightly-lit room. I have gone to display and the brightness is turned all the way up. It seems to make no difference if I slide the control all the way down or all the way up. The monitor light keys have no effect either. I found the following information at applefritter.com but I am afraid to do ANYTHING until I hear from this board. Powerbook G4 screen goes black randomly... Submitted by bigd on March 9, 2007 - 3:08am. Hardware Repair Help I have a 12" Powerbook G4 1.5" and lately the screen randomly turns itself off, the whole thing goes black, like it was asleep or off, but the computer keeps running just fine. The computer itself stays running. What I've been doing is putting the computer to sleep by closing the lid, letting it rest for a few seconds and turning it back on by opening it. I can still see that the screen is on, but the display is dark. It randomly does it. I switched the power settings to "never" for sleep and like 5 minutes for display sleep. That worked as long as its plugged into the AC adapter. When I unplugged it it did the same thing. I closed the lid and then it went to sleep and then I opened it and switched the battery settings to the above, and it was fine. I set the PMU and NVRAM again. So far it's not doing it but I am worried that it's a backlight issue or something else? I have heard of random sleeping problems with the powerbooks, but mine doesn't actually go to sleep. Any insight would be great. Thanks! bigd that's more of a power manager thing Submitted by coius on March 9, 2007 - 3:19am. the power manager controls sleep as well as the brightness of the display. Sadly, i never found out what the solution was on my old iBook before I sent it in to get it replaced by my current G4 iBook (i had the 900Mhz G3, They gave me a 1.2Ghz iBook after my G3 went in 14x Undecided ) anyways, it sounds like the power manager is having problems. I would say if it looks like it's still doing, what you do, is unplug the machine, pull the battery (save your data first before shutdown!) and press the CUDA switch (probably under the keyboard if it has one or something) and reset it is fully. If you have time, and can wait, let the system sit for 24hrs w/o power whatsoever. It might be that the power manager did not fully reset itself if the LCD Backlight goes off again in the future. if it still has warranty, and it continues to do it, call apple and let them know, it might be a hardware problem (most likely not, Apple just would rather replace mine that have me send it in for the 15th time) Anyway, Good Luck! It started with several messages going out to groups of 40-75 through the Bcc:. They are the same groups I've sent 1-3 messages a month for a couple of years. After deleting them the single address messages after them did go through but very, very slowly. Now only single address messages will go through but they take 10-15 seconds - compared to almost instantly before this problem. I have tried a few 5-10 addressee groups and they seem to go through - very slowly - but often get stuck on the last one in the group. Nauticom assured me there is nothing wrong with the account but it must be in the way Eudora is talking to their server. I have cycled the modem and router. They also said that there were no anti-spam rule changes, etc ... Another note is that my assistant on the same network noticed her outgoing messages slowed dramatically. All incoming messages seem to be fine although there I can't tell how long it takes for them to come in. Would an upgrade to 6.2.4 have a chance of helping ? Other ideas ? The fix from apple user forums is as follows: 1) write down your network preferences, or have this data available. 2) go to Library/Preferences/System Config/preferences.plist 3) Make a copy of this file to desktop. 4) delete the file from the original location. 5) restart 6) manually re-enter your network information. Message-ID: <91FD36D0-9622-49FA-8AA5-F888502441D8@mac.com> I came home tonight to a seriously misbehaving iMac -- the screen image shrinking and growing, flipping back and forth, multiple screens, single screens, turning light blue. Headache inducing like a bad '50's era sci-fi movie (just absent the freaky music). My kids said it was "sticky keys" and popped off the coverings for some of the function keys, I have 11, 12 and 13 off now. I finally seem able to operate, but am not sure if this is a permanent condition. One of the kids seemed to fess up to having spilled "a few drops of water" on the key board. I could tell there was some moisture . . . So, besides being outsmarted by a 13 and an 11 year old, I worry about possible permanent damage. To say nothing about how they know about the phenomenon. Any thoughts out there on the condition and what I need to do? Thanks for any help! I personally have a nice list of awesome pros and irritating cons. ;) I look forward to seeing everyone there - it's been a while (last month was at Shadyside) so let's all turn out for some fun. In addition, mark your calendars for the November meeting - November 22 at 10am. There will be no December meeting (happy holidays). Among the many ways of doing it: 1) Using your iPod, if it has sufficient space, with content on the iPod, plug it into the new machine, under file>Transfer purchases from iPod. Make sure you authorize the target computer for your iTunes account first. 2) Put the computer with content in target mode (start up while holding the letter T down) then connect it to the destination computer using a firewire cable. It will show on the new computer as an external hard drive, select all of the content of iTunes folder and copy it to the iTunes folder on the destination computer. Authroize the new computer with the store. 3) You can have up to 5 computers at a time authorized with your iTunes account. If you have reached the limit, once a year you can de-authorize all computers and then re-authorize the ones that you are currently using. this is not for public post please. al On Oct 26, 2008, at 11:17 PM, Shelley Lipton wrote: > My main computer is a laptop and its startup disc is getting full. When it is not useful .... and is all too often the case on listserves ... is when an ongoing conversation/chat is posted to everyone ..... like this paraphrased example of 4 emails that have been posted as an ongoing and totally unhelpful thread: 8AM Bill: I need some clarification on FireWire 400 and FireWire 800. Does anyone know the real speed difference when working on video? 8:15AM Jamie: Yes. I do 8:34AM Bill: Well, what is the difference? 8:35AM Jamie: Depends on your Mac. 9:03AM Bill: I have an iMac G3 / 600MHZ. 9:10AM Jamie: Me too, I love that model. 9:15AM Bill: What about the speed difference? 9:16AM Jamie: Seems to be the same to me. This is why the listserve software "Mailman" is set to "reply to sender" rather than "reply to all". To keep the signal to noise ratio down. Message-ID: Thanks for everyones input with the iMovie question. It was (as usual) easier than I thought In case you've ever wondered how to adjust an additional audio track to go over video in iMovie ( I was stuck on how to voice over my original video on iMovieHD v. 5.0.2), I've got it now. Initially you turn audio track on and off by checking to the right of those tracks. To adjust when you record audio as a second track, look under the pull down menu, "View", choose "show clip volume levels". This puts a line (mine is purple) over the level of sound on each track there. Then, after going back into the track you want to adjust the sound on, highlight the given track, then click each track's line which allows you to drag the level as you go. The more points you click on the line the more curvy-linear your line of audio becomes, going down to lower, and up to raise level. Pretty simple! To put it there go to "view" pull down and choose "customize toolbar". there you will see icon with double arrows and you can move it to the toolbar above the "to" on Mac Mail. Much easier to remember to do it. I can post the answers I got, but it would be much better if the people who sent them would do it, just so I dont feel wrong about reposting without permission. I would say it is a judgement call.
