A growing number of entrepreneurs are deciding a Mac is the right computer for them. By Jason R. Rich | October 20, 2008 URL: http://www.entrepreneur.com/technology/newsandtrends/article197976.html Not long ago, if you were to ask PC users what they thought about Apple Macs, you'd probably get one of two responses: Either they'd say, "Oh, those are the computers used by college students," or you'd hear, "Aren't Macs used only by creative types, like artists and musicians?" What today's business people and entrepreneurs are quickly beginning to understand is that Apple's iMacs (desktop computers) and MacBooks (notebook computers) can not only handle virtually every business application a PC can handle, but also provide a more stress-free computing experience. ------ end snip -------- P.S. The crash log always shows the system looking for some random Epson files. I would like to clear out/ purge all things Epson from this machine and get fresh drivers from Epson, only I don't know where to look on the system. There is an Epson file in the root library under the preferences folder along with other printers. I was wondering if this is all the files I need to delete or are there more someplace else. Epson's site offers no help. Any thoughts you all may have would be appreciated. Have a great day. Cool dog reflections..... We are in good hands here in Pittsburgh. We are very particular about all of our down streaming of Macs. I can tell you that the facility at Goodwill handles cathode ray tubes professionally and ships them to a facility that handles CRTs in the USA .... and we are fully aware of the standards set forth by the Basel Convention: http://www.basel.int/index.html So please watch this frightening and very well done report. I welcome your feedback. Bob Donaldson and I go to great lengths to make sure this story is not our story like the Denver, CO recyclers exposed in this report. This hits way too close to home and is a wake up call. Dave http://www.cbsnews.com/video/watch/?id=4586903n&tag=mncol;txt The Electronic Wasteland Where do the millions of computer monitors, cell phones and other electronic refuse our society generates end up? Scott Pelley reports. November 10, 2008 ================ (CBS) 60 Minutes is going to take you to one of the most toxic places on Earth - a place government officials and gangsters don't want you to see. It's a town in China where you can't breathe the air or drink the water, a town where the blood of the children is laced with lead. It's worth risking a visit because much of the poison is coming out of the homes, schools and offices of America. This is a story about recycling - about how your best intentions to be green can be channeled into an underground sewer that flows from the United States and into the wasteland. That wasteland is piled with the burning remains of some of the most expensive, sophisticated stuff that consumers crave. And 60 Minutes andcorrespondent Scott Pelley discovered that the gangs who run this place wanted to keep it a secret. What are they hiding? The answer lies in the first law of the digital age: newer is better. In with the next thing, and out with the old TV, phone or computer. All of this becomes obsolete, electronic garbage called "e-waste." Computers may seem like sleek, high-tech marvels. But what?s inside them? "Lead, cadmium, mercury, chromium, polyvinyl chlorides. All of these materials have known toxicological effects that range from brain damage to kidney disease to mutations, cancers," Allen Hershkowitz, a senior scientist and authority on waste management at the Natural Resources Defense Council, explained. "The problem with e-waste is that it is the fastest-growing component of the municipal waste stream worldwide," he said. ----- end clip ------- http://www.cbsnews.com/video/watch/?id=4586903n&tag=mncol;txt =============================================== Apple Recycling at Goodwill of Southwestern PA Apple Outreach with Hosanna Industries Apple User Groups from the Pittsburgh area PGHMAC.COM website by Nathan Brentzel Dave Sevick and Bob Donaldson dave at davesevick.com - 724-779-0099 radonaldson at mac.com - 412-477-9188 ----- Peter Carras and Marty Swartz pcarras+PAUGC1 at pitt.edu - 724-327-5870 marty.swartz at gmail.com - 412-818-8096 As Apple users in Pittsburgh, we are taking local action to keep the environment free from e-waste ..... =============================================== -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... The exact same process lists, running tasks, memory use, CPU use, and benchmark scores. Some changes to the UI to look more like a Mac, and some "under the hood" changes (very minor) that seemed to just make it worse. Some choice quotes: "In a nutshell, Windows 7 M3 is a virtual twin of Vista when it comes to performance. The few minor variations I observed during comparative testing are easily explained away by slight tweaks to the kernel (such as the aforementioned MDAC changes); they certainly don't indicate a significant performance overhaul. More important, these variations pale in comparison with the 40 percent gap in performance I've observed between Vista and Windows XP SP3. From a raw throughput perspective, Windows 7 promises to perform as poorly as its predecessor. "Pre-beta" notwithstanding, the reality is that any hope for closing of the performance gap with Windows XP is unlikely to materialize in Windows 7." "Overall, the changes are mostly superficial. Even the new Task Bar is simply a twist on the existing Explorer UI model, not to mention a blatant rip-off of the Mac OS X dock. Moreover, none of Windows 7's UI goodness is the result of any architectural changes to the OS" "Bottom line: So far, Windows 7 looks and behaves almost exactly like Windows Vista. It performs almost exactly like Vista. And it breaks all sorts of things that used to work just fine under Vista. In other words, Microsoft's follow-up to its most unpopular OS release since Windows Me threatens to deliver zero measurable performance benefits while introducing new and potentially crippling compatibility issues." The major difference between the one that was presented and this one is that Disk Inventory X has a graphical display of the drive contents. It will show each file as a box with the relative size of the box equating to how much drive space it is taking up. It also color codes the file types so you can see how much of your drive is filled with mp3s or imovie files. It is also free so that is always nice. NetRestore resides upon an extremely old base of code that has become increasingly more fragile and difficult to maintain. The strategy within NetRestore has also seen its day pass. Several years ago I scoped out dramatic changes for "NetRestore 4," but in the years since it became clear that I simply didn't have time to completely rewrite NetRestore from the ground up. I also feel relieved of this responsibility as the market for deployment tools has matured. In particular, I am impressed with Deploy Studio, a suite of tools that very closely resembles where I wanted to take NetRestore 4. So, today I am announcing the retirement of NetRestore. I will continue to provide a link to NetRestore for the next couple months, but I strongly encourage anyone that is building a deployment strategy to consider Deploy Studio instead. I would also like to clarify that this decision has no bearing on my development efforts towards Carbon Copy Cloner -- I am fully committed to continued development and support of that product for the forseeable future. Finally, I want to thank everyone that has given me positive feedback and encouragement over the last six years. In the technology world, nothing can compare to the philanthropy of the Macintosh community and I am so proud to be a part of it. While I won't be writing deployment software, I do look forward to ongoing contributions to this community as I am able in the form of articles and best practices." As someone that managed a very large environment of Macs as well as PCs I would have never been able to do it without Netrestore. When I started at my school district I was imaging each machine by hand from an external drive and having to rename each machine and make all the comfiguration changes. While maintaining a few machines like that is okay the 900+ that I had was just unwieldy. Then came imaging from the network but still having to name the machine and connect them to the two directories. Nirvana came when I found the auto naming scripts and a few other scripting solutions. Today, three years after I developed the solution, the school district is still using it to image their machines. Now a technician doesn't even have to go out to deal with a software issue they can just have someone in the building reboot it and boot off the network and 30 minutes later the machine is fresh and ready for the user to log in. The Windows PCs are no where even close to that even still. Recently, I switched from using the unstable and agonizing Microsoft Entourage app to accessing my zoominternet account with Mac Mail. I have been using Mail application to get my .mac account mail. For .mac account, Mail has always worked very well. I set up an account in Mail for the Zoominternet service. It worked for a while. Then Mail would seem to get confused about what server to access for sending from the Zoominternet account -- I'd need to constantly reset the account preferences. Ultimately Mail simply completely stopped being able to send using the Zoominternet account. About 2 weeks ago, it also stopped being able to receive email from that account as well! After exhausting my own capabilities (limited they are and this is principally trying to reset the POP account for Armstrong all over again) I threw in the towel and called Armstrong support. The tech there said the likely solution is to rebuild my Mail app and accounts. I am willing to do that, but he also warns that I would likely lose any saved emails/folders when I do that. He said tyhat Mail is unlike any other email program, so blah, blah, blah. So, my question: Is there a way to put the already saved emails I really want into a file not connected to Mail to be able to access once the Mail app is redone -- either thru the rebuilt Mail or just separately? Thanks for any help offered! Ralph Waechter -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I have a little issue however. I use my Mac for almost everything, but I installed Parallels and Windows several months back to run a Windows-based program. Everything was working pretty well, until I decided to re-organize some documents. Right after that, when I try to open Parallels and Windows, the 'Windows' window comes up and asks me to put in the serial number of the program as if I need to install Windows again. I think I must have accidentally moved the program to a 'hidden' place that can't read the file. I know I haven't deleted it. I called Tech support and got someone who didn't even understand what I was talking about. I think it must be a pretty simple thing, as I was only moving documents around. 1. Are any of you able to help me understand (or tell me where to get this info) how everything is organized so I can put it back the right way? 2. Perhaps you can just tell me where and how this particular program needs to be located. I appreciate your time and talents! Today we refurbished 12 Macs, bringing our all-time total to 1,608. We also took some time to reorganize our space to make room for greater work flow efficiencies in the coming year. We want to stay on top of managing the ratio of uncompleted and completed Macs in our work area to minimize clutter. We'll be taking the day after Thanksgiving off next week, but will return on Friday, December 5. After that, we'll be taking the rest of the year off. We now have a stock of about 300 refurbished Macs available at Goodwill's CompuerWorks store, more than enough to hold them over the holiday season. One note, however: The store's entire stock of Power Macintosh G3 and G4 Towers, about 25 machines, was sold to a single customer. The store doesn't have any of the Tower models remaining in inventory. Of course, we'll make more as donations come in. Robert A. Jobs has tried working with retailers to make shopping for Apple's stylish products as appealing as using them--everything from setting up kiosks to special sections adorned with Apple's Think Different posters. Still, the computer maker's share has fallen, and Jobs figures he knows why. "Buying a car is no longer the worst purchasing experience. Buying a computer is now No. 1," he griped at the MacWorld trade show in January. Now, he's taking matters into his own hands. On May 19, Apple will open a swanky new retail store--the first of as many 110 nationwide-- at Tyson's Corner Galleria mall outside Washington. While Apple execs won't comment on their plans, the idea seems clear: Well-trained Apple salespeople in posh Apple stores can convince would-be buyers of the Mac's unique advantages, including its well-regarded iMovie software for making home videos and its iTunes program for burning custom CDs. "CAVIAR." With its top-notch brand and proven marketing panache, Apple should have a shot at improving on the Gateway Country Store model. And it will give Apple fresh outlets to sell its own products such as the titanium PowerBook and other companies' consumer gadgets such as Handspring Inc.'s Visor handheld line. The company would gain new revenue as a reseller of other electronic goodies and have more control over marketing and servicing of its products. What's more, Apple could boost margins by cutting out middlemen and wooing buyers to higher-priced models. -----------Clip ----------- the rest at : http://www.businessweek.com/print/magazine/content/01_21/b3733059.htm?chan=mz -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
