From charles at firthconsulting.com Mon Dec 1 11:36:21 2008 From: charles at firthconsulting.com (Charles Firth) Date: Mon, 1 Dec 2008 13:36:21 -0500 Subject: [NPMUG] New OSX trojan out there Message-ID: <8553BBFA-E678-4C55-8592-9C580D79DC85@firthconsulting.com> Once again, the Zlob gang has released a new OSX-targeted trojan - very similar to their previous work. It sits on dodgy or infected websites proporting to offer funny or explicit videos. When you attempt to view said video, you are told you are lacking a required Codec and are prompted to download either an EXE (Windows) or a DMG (OSX) file. When you download the DMG, it contains a normal looking "install.pkg" file that then installs some Really Bad Stuff on your Mac. Most notably, it redirects your DNS requests to some rogue servers in the Ukraine. This lets them redirect any web traffic you type in to their own fake sites - for example, www.google.com would be redirected to a fake google. So please be careful online and not install anything unless you completely trust it. Remember, if OSX asks for your password, it's because it's doing something serious to the machine and needs permission. Don't give permission unless you're sure it's safe. More info on the new trojan, called Jahlav-A, can be found here: http://www.sophos.com/security/blog/2008/11/2024.html Note that this is not a "virus" - it can't spread on it's own - it requires you to download and install it for the hacker. Unfortunately, the weakest link in computer security is (and has always been) the user. Don't be that user. :) Charles PS: It's a testament to Homer that we use the word Trojan (short for Trojan Horse) to define these "fake gifts" containing malicious code. Nice on the outside (like a video codec) but full of enemy soldiers. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Donaldson) Date: Fri, 05 Dec 2008 21:43:27 -0500 Subject: [NPMUG] Goodwill CRC update Dec. 5, 2008 and Yearly Report Message-ID: Dear Mac friends: Many thanks to Charlie Hutchens, Rich Fitzgibbon, John Hamill, Tucker Trainor and Dave Sevick for joining me today at the Goodwill Computer Recycling Center. Today, we put another productive year at the Goodwill Computer Recycling Center to bed. We quickly took care of four slot-load DV iMacs in the intake bin, then spend the rest of the day preparing keyboards and mice to match our inventory of refurbished iMacs. These four iMacs bring our all- time total of refurbished Macs to 1,614. These were the last ones we'll prepare this year. We'll be taking off for the holidays and return to begin our third year at Goodwill on Friday, January 9, 2009. In the past three weeks, all of Goodwill ComputerWorks store inventory of G3 and G4 Towers, and 700 mhz eMacs were sold in bulk to Cyber Depot, a computer store in Youngwood, Westmoreland County (U.S. Route 119 & South 4th St. ). You can now find our work for sale there in addition to ComputerWorks. Here's what we've accomplished this year: We've refurbished 595 Macintoshes in 2008. 449 were at our current location at Goodwill on Pittsburgh's South Side; 146 were done at the CRC's previous location in Pittsburgh's Lawrenceville, now a UPMC parking lot. This compares to 450 Macs in 2007. Not bad, considering we went from 2,000 square feet in Lawrenceville to approximately 450 square feet of work space on the South Side. To put this in perspective, we had done only 569 Macs before joining with Goodwill in March of 2007. These amazing numbers are due to the continuing dedication of many people: Not only the people who show up at Goodwill to help make our Macs sing again, but all of you who keep us in your thoughts and tell everyone they know where to take a computer for donation or recycling. And especially to Charles Firth, whose technical contributions have allowed us to erase and re-image hard drives to produce these dramatically increased numbers. The coming year will see new relationships with organizations seeking to help people, and Goodwill will be honoring bulk rates to make our Macs even more affordable for those people. You'll hear more as this gets underway after the New Year. Please have a joyous holiday season, and thank you all. Robert A. Here is a beginning glimpse of what direction we're headed ..... and I'm delighted. Dave ================== Full video of Saturday Morning Dec 6, 2008 Address: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iGpIT2bVZDw ----clip---- "Third, my economic recovery plan will launch the most sweeping effort to modernize and upgrade school buildings that this country has ever seen. We will repair broken schools, make them energy-efficient, and put new computers in our classrooms. Because to help our children compete in a 21st century economy, we need to send them to 21st century schools. As we renew our schools and highways, we?ll also renew our information superhighway. It is unacceptable that the United States ranks 15th in the world in broadband adoption. Here, in the country that invented the internet, every child should have the chance to get online, and they?ll get that chance when I?m President ? because that?s how we?ll strengthen America?s competitiveness in the world. In addition to connecting our libraries and schools to the internet, we must also ensure that our hospitals are connected to each other through the internet. That is why the economic recovery plan I?m proposing will help modernize our health care system ? and that won?t just save jobs, it will save lives. We will make sure that every doctor?s office and hospital in this country is using cutting edge technology and electronic medical records so that we can cut red tape, prevent medical mistakes, and help save billions of dollars each year." ----end clip---- Full text of Saturday Morning Dec 6, 2008 Address: http://change.gov/newsroom/entry/the_key_parts_of_the_jobs_plan/ -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... The old compact Macs had character. Anyone who has ever used one knows just how personal the computing experience feels with one of these little guys. Today's Macs might be powerful and offer a lot of nice features but they just don't have the personality of the old Macs, especially in terms of design. The current iMac just looks like a big panel...it might look elegant but it has no charm whatsoever. The user interface is also missing its sense of friendliness on current Macs. No happy Macs, no "Welcome to Macintosh", not even apologies when system errors occur. I hope Apple makes a 25th Anniversary Mac that looks like a compact (even if it's a flatter version) and considers bringing back the sense of friendliness!!! As for Steve, he needs to stick with the black mock turtleneck... Message-ID: <83E604B8-9C7C-459D-B81A-DF8F9613DC4C@davesevick.com> Folks, These days I find friends, neighbors, colleagues, famous people and sometimes entire organizations making a complete switch to an enlightened life with Macs, iPhones and iPods at work and play ..... .... delivered from a tired and frustrating legacy of PC use .... .... and it is almost to the level of "being set free" from the problems inherent in the Windows platform. It is always a happy day to meet a new Mac user. Many public displays of Mac affection are strategic and intentional on TV and in movies .... in Apple's highly successful product placement efforts. Some Mac spottings are not so intentional and are very cool to share with others. In many ways it gives all us Mac users more evidence to evangelize on behalf of Apple. I mention the US Government's use of Apples in the Army and FBI all the time. So, having this phenomenon of pervasive and yearly Mac usage increases in all walks of life is definitely OK to post here on this list .... ========= Here are a few guidelines to consider before you post: 1. Have some valid proof, not rumors ..... example : I heard recently that a large PA university is "mandating" all incoming freshman buy a Mac .... not PC's, only a Mac. I need to research this first before I post an unsubstantiated rumor. 2. Post a screenshot of the Apple in use or link to some visual or written reference to help our listserve members research it further for their own "bragging rights" to spread the word. Having the NPMUG and at least one other source of reference makes evangelizing Apple's growth more valid and trustworthy. 3. Don't editorialize beyond the spotting of the Mac and please refrain drawing conclusions as to why that company or individual is using Macs in your words .... please try to find their words as the background for supporting their use of Apples. (called General Purpose GPU computing, or GPGPU) It's the "next big thing" in parallel-processing computing. Perviously, the video card manufacturers each had their own codebase for this sort of thing - you'd have to explicitly write code for nVidia, ATI, etc - so the only people that did were video game manufacturers. Now, with OpenCL an official standard (it was proposed by Apple 6 months ago) you can write code for any video card. And a lot of other companies have already signed on for formal support. More importantly, OSX 10.6 (Snow Leopard) will incorporate OpenCL into the very OS - so everything in OSX will be faster and render smoothly. Windows 7, on the other hand, has no plans in place to support OpenCL or any of the older (now obsolete) proprietary GPGPU systems. So Windows 7 will be as slow (if not slower) then Vista, while OSX 10.6 will actually be faster then 10.5. http://www.tgdaily.com/html_tmp/content-view-40500-140.html -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Not being satisfied to simply port their windows version over to Mac using an emulator, Logos Bible Software spent three-and-a-half years rebuilding their award-winning Bible software from the ground up for Mac. ?With more and more of our users switching to Mac, it just made sense for us to build Logos for Mac,? said Bob Pritchett, President of Logos Bible Software. ?Many Mac users have been running Logos using Boot Camp or programs like Parallels. We?re happy to announce they can now run Logos natively.? Logos for Mac offers users powerful tools and resources that any scholar can appreciate, while at the same time providing an intuitive and easy-to-navigate user interface. Message-ID: <420C5825-1217-429D-9746-DAD67152A7FA@davesevick.com> The tech note for 10.5.6 states : ? MobileMe - Contacts, calendars, and bookmarks on a Mac automatically sync within a minute of the change being made on the computer, another device, or the web at me.com. ========== This has been a real pain for me as I rely heavily on iCal and iPhone updates syncing in a timely manner for my workflow. Now, with 10.5.6 installed, when I have the iPhone settings for "Fetch New Data" set for "Push" for my me.com calendars .... it actually does move newly entered data on my "MacBookPro" using Apple iCal ....... to the "cloud" at Apple ...... and to my "iPhone" rather quickly and within the promised 60 seconds above. Actual results are less than 10 seconds. One little catch .... I have my MobileMe Sync preferences set to "Automatic" .... which you would think to mean "Automatic" ..... yet when I make edits the Sync circular arrows do not "spin" right away ... see here: I have to click the "Sync Now" menu choice to start the circular arrows spinning. When that circular animation stops .... THEN ..... I start my stopwatch .... and it consistently syncs ..... from my Mac ---> Cloud ---> iPhone within 10 seconds tonight. Just to update you .... since the release of MobileMe .... this process was timed at 15 - 30 minutes on average. Not acceptable at all for serious calendar users. Not sure what Apple did on the back end here in 10.5.6 .... but it is much much better tonight. Now, if "automatic" only meant "automatic" ...... :-) Dear Apple, You are getting closer with 10.5.6 ..... but MobileMe is still "beta" for any serous business user .... Philip Schiller, Apple?s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing, will deliver the opening keynote for this year?s Macworld Conference & Expo, and it will be Apple?s last keynote at the show. The keynote address will be held at Moscone West on Tuesday, January 6, 2009 at 9:00 a.m. Macworld will be held at San Francisco?s Moscone Center January 5-9, 2009. Apple is reaching more people in more ways than ever before, so like many companies, trade shows have become a very minor part of how Apple reaches its customers. The increasing popularity of Apple?s Retail Stores, which more than 3.5 million people visit every week, and the Apple.com website enable Apple to directly reach more than a hundred million customers around the world in innovative new ways. Apple has been steadily scaling back on trade shows in recent years, including NAB, Macworld New York, Macworld Tokyo and Apple Expo in Paris. Apple ignited the personal computer revolution in the 1970s with the Apple II and reinvented the personal computer in the 1980s with the Macintosh. Today, Apple continues to lead the industry in innovation with its award-winning computers, OS X operating system and iLife and professional applications. Apple is also spearheading the digital media revolution with its iPod portable music and video players and iTunes online store, and has entered the mobile phone market with its revolutionary iPhone. Sample reports from MacFixIt readers include: "The installation configuration phase stalls almost immediately with 10.5.6 on my MacBook. "Twice I've tried to install the latest OS X update. The Finder quits and the Configuration Installation screen hangs with just a hint of blue on the progress bar. Dual 2.3 GHz PowerPC G5. Had to force shutdowns." "I have a PowerBook g4 1.33 aluminum and I have just downloaded the update. I rebooted and now I have been on the "configuring installation" screen for at least 2 hrs. I have 2 gigs of ram and at least 20 gigs free. I have never had a problem with an installation before. I googles around and haven't seen any mention of anyone having this problem." If you are experiencing a similar issue, first try downloading (or re- downloading) the appropriate standalone update from Apple's download page and reapplying it. Failing that, restart into Safe mode, by holding down the Shift key from the moment you hear the startup "bong" to the moment the "spinning gear" appears. Expect this startup to take longer than usual. Don't be alarmed if the fans whir loudly during the "spinning gear" display. Eventually you will be presented with the Safe Boot login screen. Log in as the administrator and reattempt the update. Remember to avoid performing any other processes while the Mac OS X 10.5.6 update is taking place in order to lessen the chances of this issue. Mail quits after launching, crashes Several users have reported repeated Mail.app crashes or quits on launch after the Mac OS X 10.5.6 update. Reports include: "I updated to 10.5.6 and launched Mail. It quits right after showing the Inbox. Wish I knew how to fix this." "Since updating, Mail crashes EVERY TIME I try to open an email with an attachment." "After installing 10.5.6 my Mail application crashed repeatedly , even after rebooting." If you are experiencing similar issues, try uninstalling PGP software and other third-party Mail.app add-ons. Failing that, try the following fixes: Remove ToDo itemsUsers might check the console application for the Mail crash log (listed under "CrashReporter" in the Console application) if the problem occurs. If the crash log lists something such as "trying to set a non-ToDo MailboxUid for a ToDo", then users might try removing accumulated ToDo items. These items are available both in Mail as well as iCal, so users can remove them by opening iCal and deleting them from that application. It's recommended to list all ToDo items and then cut them using the "Edit" menu instead of outright deleting them. Then quit iCal and attempt to open Mail again. If this does not fix the problem, users can then open iCal and paste the previously cut ToDos back into the application. Troubleshoot messages loaded at startup If a message contains corrupt content (pictures or attachments) that are causing problems, users can prevent the messages from loading at application launch by holding the shift key directly after launching Mail. From here users can troubleshoot mail messages to see if any cause the program to hang or crash, and remove any problematic messages causing such behavior. Remove preference files and troubleshoot accounts If the first two fixes do not address the problem, users can try removing the Mail application preferences, called com.apple.Mail.plist and located in the ~/Library/Preferences/ folder. Doing this will require mail account information to be reentered, but all previous messages and mailbox setups will remain and be visible again after account information has been supplied. In addition, Mail setup can be compared against that for a fresh account by creating a new user account and logging into that one. Then users can set up Mail and see if the problem persists. If it does not, then users know the problem has to do with their account and can troubleshoot the problem, targeting items in the ~/Library/Mail/ folder, or removing the contents of the ~/ Library/Caches/Mail/ folder. AirPort Utility problems A handful of users have reported that AirPort Utility is broken after the Mac OS X 10.5.6 update. One reader writes: "MBP 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo. Installed 10.5.6 using combo updater in safe mode. After update, "Airport Utility was unable to find any Apple wireless devices." Airport connection is fine, though. I reapplied the combo updater, repaired permissions, ran DiskWarrior 4.1.1, and Airport Utility still doesn't see any of my routers. Please advise." This issue can generally be resolved by downloading and reinstalling AirPort Utility. Swollen RAM usage Some users have reported dramatically increased idle RAM usage under Mac OS X 10.5.6. One reader writes: "First impressions are that I regret applying it to my MacBook Air, which of course has only 2GB of RAM in it. This update consumes almost 1 GB of that without any running apps besides the usual background daemons. That means there is just one Gig of RAM left for my apps. A reboot does not change this behavior." If you are experiencing a similar issue, please let us know. Also, when trying to download via Software Update, I get the message that there are no new updates. Perhaps this is because it is not available via SU? Did Apple pull it? I'm starting to regret it. Now, iCal will eventually hog ALL available RAM and become unresponsive, requiring a force quit. This is on either machine. Even more, while the automatic syncing feature sounds nice, it's not implemented very well: it starts to sync TOO QUICK, like in the middle of creating something. So iCal slows terribly while i"m typing the title of a newly-added To Do, for example, because it's actively trying to sync it while I'm actually making it. Dammit! [ Reply to This ] Mac OS X 10.5.6: failed installation, mail quits, more Authored by: Daniel Staal on Tuesday, December 16 2008 @ 09:22 AM PST On RAM usage: This may or may not be a problem, depending on what's going on. For the example given, for instance, if it means less swap is being used it will increase both battery life and performance. The question is if it is just caching more (and better, hopefully), or if it is actual 'needed' program memory that will need to be swapped in and out as you are using things. [ Reply to This ] Mac OS X 10.5.6: failed installation, mail quits, more Authored by: julianlim on Tuesday, December 16 2008 @ 08:09 PM PST Installed Mac OS X 10.5.6 update on an iBook G4 (1.2 GHz) w. 1.25 GB of memory via Software Update last night (against most people's suggestion of installing using the stand-alone combo updater). Repaired permissions using Disk Utility and verified disk, and restarted prior to updating. The update process went smoothly. Ran another permissions repair after the update. So far so good. Everything seems to be faster compared to Mac OS X 10.5.5 (launching applications, switching user using fast user switching, browsing using Safari, etc.) Mail works as expected, and AirPort Utility opens without a hitch. In fact, using Spaces with 8 open applications do not cause any slowdown whatsoever. I love this update! In fact, knowing this, I will now looking forward to upgrading my Intel MacBook that is still running Mac OS X 10.4.11. [ Reply to This ] Mac OS X 10.5.6: Mail quits Authored by: domo on Tuesday, December 16 2008 @ 11:23 PM PST I too had the Mail crashing issue after upgrading an iMac G5 using the combo updater. (I had no problems upgrading a unibody MacBook Pro in the same way.) Turned out that the issue was a Mail bundle, although not the Letter Opener that has caused others' problems: I had GPGmail installed on the iMac, but had not got around to putting it on the MacBook. Moving the bundle from Library/Mail/Bundles to ../Bundles (Disabled), then restarting Mail, solved my problem. Although I hope GPGmail is updated soon: when I need it, I need it bad. One observation I really wanted to make .... and it is mentioned below by Dave Caolo ... is that every year during Christmas season I see clients hold off on purchases as they "wait for MacWorld announcements...." Fair enough. But then these newly announced products don't ship until later that year ... almost NEVER right away. So, I welcome the last few years of year-round Apple product announcements. Rumors are less and purchases are more common. Last thought is that we are so very lucky that many attended the "last" Steve Job's Keynote at MacWorld and were able to share some of the excitement with you all during the NPMUG meeting in Jan 2008 over iChat from Moscone Center in San Francisco to MacOutfiters in Cranberry Twp . Pittsburgh's Mark Dalrymple ( developer at Google now ) was a special treat to see at the expo. Who would have thought that was the final chapter in a very very cool part of Apple history. ================== Here is the very timely and ( I feel ) accurate ... Thoughts on Apple's last Macworld Expo keynote by Dave Caolo on Dec 17th 2008 at 9:00AM Thoughts on Apple's last Macworld Expo keynote Filed under: Macworld, Analysis / Opinion, Steve Jobs Late yesterday, Apple surprised pundits, fans and presumably IDG by announcing that Macworld Expo 2009 would be their last as an official exhibitor. Along with that news came the announcement that Phil Schiller will deliver the keynote address in place of Steve Jobs. People will speculate about the reasons for Apple's move for some time. Here are my thoughts. There must be a financial component. Sure, Apple announced $25 billion in cash reserves and no debt at the end of Q4 in October, but it's very expensive to attend these events, even for Apple. Consider the extent of Apple's presence at Macworld Expo, between machines, people, displays, etc. Even software giant Adobe has dropped out. Of course, it goes beyond the cost of the show. Nearly every year, Apple's stock dips after the keynote presentation when rumored products or services aren't introduced. It's a silly, unfortunate and routine drop... which brings me to point number two. The rumors themselves. The current iPod nano model was all but revealed prematurely when photos of a case produced by a 3rd party manufacturer appeared online. When Steve Jobs mentioned it at the official press event a few days later, some attendees laughed. Steve responded by saying, "It's not funny" in a stern tone of voice. He was clearly pissed. That wasn't the first time Apple had been scooped by the media. In 2002, the Canadian edition of Time Magazine leaked a cover photo of Steve and Jon Ive with the G4 iMac just prior to its introduction at Macworld Expo. You'll also remember that Apple aggressively pursued rumor site Thinksecret last year, and it's currently offline. Not only do rumors hurt the company financially, they take some of the excitement out of product updates, and in turn, the media's enthusiasm. When the media basically knows what's coming, their interest wanes just enough. Apple wants more control. Control over product schedules outside the constraints of Expo keynotes. Once Apple steps away from the tick-tock of January showcases, it will be able to stage a press event and introduce a product or service when it's actually ready, not when a certain calendar date arrives. Finally, I've always found the timing to be odd. The first week of January is right after all the major winter holidays. People are tapped out financially and enjoying the loot they picked up the in weeks before from family and friends. Asking them to spend another grand on a computer just then isn't ideal. Alternatively, Apple has consistently released iPod updates in September, just as kids are going back to school. The inevitable question is one of Steve's health, but I think John Gruber got this one right. If Steve was ill, they'd send in a proxy like Phil but keep the rest of the game intact. The fact that they've abandoned the whole thing says to me that it's a political and financial move more than anything else. Time Magazine asks the health question right away in their reaction article, quoting an Apple spokesperson as saying, "Phil is giving the keynote because this is Apple's last year in the show, and it doesn't make sense for us to make a major investment in a trade show we will no longer be attending." Even if Steve is as healthy as a horse but still looks thin, his appearance could have an affect on the company's stock. I don't think I've ever seen a company whose financial well being is so closely tied to the health of its CEO. For now, at least, IDG plans to put on Macworld Expo 2010, with or without Apple. I say more power to them, but as a person who attended two Macworld Expos in Boston without Apple, my faith is waning. It is a bit sad that Steve won't wrap up the final Macworld Expo; we can hope that he'll make a special appearance as Phil Schiller's One More Thing. Apple can only do so much testing of updates before it releases them into the "wild." There is always a good chance that any update especially an major OS update will break something or cause unexpected problems. I think it is well recommended to wait a few days (maybe a week) before running the update on your on computers. That gives time for these problems to be discovered and hopefully fixed. This becomes especially true when you have computers that you rely on for your livelihood. If the computer is running well enough that you are able to productively use it, then there is no value in being the first in line to install software that may potentially bring your computer to a standstill. There is a reason it's called the "bleeding" edge and a little patience may save you hours of headaches. He positions himself, personally, as the face of Apple. But then wants privacy. Apple's marketing has always been bent on celebrity. To my recollection, no other major publicly traded company, with a celebrity based marketing approach like Apple, would be able to ignore shareholders to this degree. From a human perspective, I agree with the privacy concerns. But, once one couples the personal with the product, de-coupling can be messy. http://www.alleyinsider.com/2008/12/yes-steve-jobs-health-matters-aapl On Dec 30, 2008, at 9:52 PM, Dave Sevick wrote: > http://www.cnbc.com/id/15840232?video=979374888&play=1 > > See this CNBC report that addresses earlier rumors. > > > _______________________________________________ > NPMUG mailing list > NPMUG at davesevick.com > http://davesevick.com/mailman/listinfo/npmug
